“A Close Shave” by Helen Godden

Do you ever go to quilting or sewing shows?

It’s such a thrill to see so many sewists and quilters in one place joined by our shared passion. They are a great place to see what other people in the community are working on, to check out new sewing techniques, and to soak up inspiration.

Oh, the inspiration! I always walk away from a quilting show with so many ideas and plans swirling around my head. In my book, it is well worth the investment of time and money.

I was looking through the display gallery for the upcoming Original Sewing & Quilting Expo and I was so excited and inspired, I couldn’t resist sharing. At the Expo’s upcoming stop in Minneapolis there will be six galleries of quilts featured. The quilts featured run the gamut of traditional quilt designs, modern quilts, and art quilts.

There are art quilts that interpret everyday items including cutlery, pencil shavings, and even a housefly.  I was blown away by the way these artists were able to find inspiration in the everyday objects that surround us.

Here is more background information about this exhibit from the juror Alicia Merrett and curator Gül Laporte:

Redirecting the Ordinary is about turning things around, upside down, inside out, and backwards.  Or how even just a minuscule course correction can charge up the humdrum, turn the common into the uncommon, and make the expected unexpected.

These selected artists have interpreted the object or phenomenon in cloth to bring attention and significance to the ordinary.
