Strong friendships create some of the most powerful relationships we have in our lives. We have best friends, shoe-shopping friends, imaginary friends, fair-weather friends, and frenemies. Sometimes a friendship lasts forever, but occasionally it is the source of heartbreak.
In the August/September issue of Quilting Arts, we challenged our readers to create an art quilt based on the theme "Friendship & Devotion." We received over 60 entries to this challenge. Here are the finalists:
Barbara J. Brown, "Sister Love"
Nneka K. Gamble, "Frenemies"
Desiree Habicht, "My Best Friend Works for Me"
Shel Hein, "Me Too!"
Carrie Hinds, "Best Friends"
Joy McPadden, "Dear Friend"
Cathy Mitchell, "Friendships of Time"
Mardell Rampton, "Friendship … Layered, Interwoven, Connected"
Christy Renken, "Always Connected"
Elana Erwin Schreiber, "Stitchin' Sisters from 5 States"
Gayle Scott, "Rebecca's Rose"
Els Vereycken, "My Best Friend"
Congratulations to the finalists and thank you to all who participated in this challenge!
Next steps for finalists:
Your artwork must be received in our offices no later than October 18, along with a flat shipping and handling fee of $15 (U.S. and Canada) or $25 (all other international). This fee, which must be paid in U.S. dollars, covers the shipping costs, packing materials, and handling for the return of your entry. Only cash, checks, or money orders can be accepted. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Interweave.
If you have not already done so, please label your quilt on the reverse with your name, email address, and title of the quilt. If it is not apparent, on the reverse also label the top of the quilt (a temporary label is sufficient). Include your return address inside the package. If you did not do so in your original submission, please include a statement (around 50 words) about your quilt–the "story" of it, not the materials used (unless they are intertwined).
All finalists' quilts will be published, either on our website or in the February/March 2014 issue of Quilting Arts Magazine.
The entire piece and all of its packaging must weigh less than 3 lbs. and fit inside a standard shipping/mailing box or padded envelope for return shipment.
Finalists should mail their entries to:
