Half-Square Triangle Quilts to Try

Whether you’re quilting style is traditional or modern, half-square triangles (HSTs) are a quilting staple. I’ve been reading a lot about them and watching several videos over the past few days in an attempt to find the “best” half-square triangle method as I gear up to start a new quilting project that features the block.

If you don’t know how to make half-square triangle blocks or are looking for an efficient method for making them, we have a tutorial on the website with easy-to-follow instructions and diagrams; click here to check out the article.

I usually learn better if I can watch a new process in action. In my search I came across the HST episode of My First Quilt Show with  Sara Gallegos on QNNtv and it was incredibly helpful! In addition to showing two different ways to create HST blocks, Sara also demonstrates quarter-square triangles.

Since the half-square triangle block is old news for most quilters, I’ve decided to pull together a few projects that use HSTs in a variety of ways. Hopefully these projects will inspire you to break out your sewing machine so you can start sewing up some HST units.

Rachel used pre-cut strips of ombré fabric to create this simple yet striking wall hanging. If you aren’t familiar with this method of cutting HSTs from strips of fabric, watch as Mary Fons demonstrates it in this video from QNNtv.

Twinkle Star Quilt
by Debbie Grifka

Debbie updates the timeless star quilt by using one over-sized star rather than several smaller star blocks. To save cutting time, make your HSTs out of 5″ charm squares. To make this versatile quilt pattern even more modern, try using solids instead of prints.

Appliqué Bird Quilt
by Rosemarie DeBoer

In this quilt the HST background is framed by fabric from Carrie Bloomston’s Story collection. The active triangles set the scene for the appliquéd birds to take center stage. If you want to recreate this quilt at home order the kit.

This quilt uses half-square triangle blocks to recreate the effect of a water droplet hitting a pool of water. Jess pairs an assortment of blue fabrics strip-pieced together with a variety of gray prints to create her HST units.
