I love teaching! So when offered the opportunity not only to teach at Quilting Live! in Atlanta (September 11-13), but to choose what I'd like to teach–well, that's about as good as it gets.
|Jacquelyn deRuyter's Village Houses. I'm teaching a version of this project
using Pellon interfacing, at Quilting Live! Sept.ember 11-13, 2014.
Since the quilting team had just sent Quilting Arts Holiday to the printer, I knew I wanted to pick a project from that issue, and I started putting together my class for Jacquelyn deRuyter's Village Houses. The walls are created by stitching fabric strips on a layer of Pellon. And then the fun begins–these houses can be customized in shape, size, and embellishment. I can't wait to see what the inventive people in this class come up with.
Also at Quilting Live! will be the popular Make-it/Take-it area. With a shorter time frame to sew, the flex-frame coin purses seemed a perfect choice. Surprisingly easy to put together, drop-in sewists should have no trouble at all finishing up this cute project. Working with Moda linen is an added bonus!
But as much as I enjoy teaching–and learning from my students–I also am excited to have the opportunity later this year to sit in a classroom for a weekend workshop at a conference in New Hampshire. One of the wonders of quilting and sewing is that there is always more to learn and explore. It seems endless at times–and I mean that in the best possible way!
Here are some of the benefits of learning something new, according to research on the subject:
Increased confidence. Tackling and mastering a new skill or subject is an accomplishment!
More creativity. Learning something new opens your mind to other possibilities.
You feel better. Focusing on a new task or skill can act like meditation, helping you to relax.
You meet new people. Learning in a group can become a social event as you share tips, laugh about mistakes, and accomplish goals together.
So possibly you can head down to Atlanta and take in some of the Quilting Live! events. Possibly you can sit down next to an enthusiastic friend and teach how to bind a quilt or put together a nine-patch.
Teacher? Student? Both is best.
