Most quilt artists have a good eye for color, pattern, and what goes together. If they didn’t, they probably wouldn’t be quilting.
But when deciding how to make a patchwork quilt design, your fabric choices can make a big difference in how the overall design looks.
Whether you’re working from your stash or purchasing commercial fabric, coordinating the colors with the pattern to achieve the desired effect can be overwhelming. Here are some basic tips for finding a pleasing array of fabrics that will go well together.
Find an inspiration fabric. It could be from your stash or something you spotted at the fabric store. Take a piece of that fabric and find fabrics whose colors match the ones in the inspiration swatch. If you have the selvedge with the color dots, you can use those to help your search.
Follow the photos. Peruse your phone photos or Pinterest boards. What patchwork quilt patterns, colors or color combinations are you attracted to? You may think you’d never want to make a quilt with black fabric or a bright floral, but your inspiration photos may tell you otherwise.
Line it up. It’s hard to go wrong if you design a quilt using a designer’s fabric line. The colors ways and patterns are literally designed to go together in patchwork projects. How you put them together is your choice.
Tula Pink, who designs for FreeSpirit Fabrics, loves it when quilters create new combinations with her fabrics.
Pick a kit. The easiest way to make sure your patchwork quilt fabrics coordinate is to create a quilt from a kit. This is a good choice for a beginner who wants to focus on construction details while making sure the design works, or the more experienced quilter looking to create a quilt from favorite fabrics more quickly.
