Win a Kit to Make Your Own Handmade Quilt Art

I love to make quilts as gifts. It's my way of saying "I love you" and I know how much they mean to the person I give them to.

Black and White Cross Quilt and Chevron
Pillow from Modern Patchwork 2014.

Truth is, though, sometimes I'm a bit strapped for time. Often I don't have the time for the shopping, cutting, and pattern selection.  It's an age-old problem but what's a quilter to do?

We at Quilting Arts have just the thing — a kit for a dramatic modern quilt!

The Black and White Cross Quilt and Chevron Pillow Kits come with pre-cut Kona cotton fabric squares, patterns, and complete instructions for making these projects featured on the cover of Modern Patchwork Winter 2014. You can purchase these kits while supplies last.

But for one lucky quilter, we'll give away the fabric squares and a copy of Modern Patchwork with the pattern and directions.

Just leave a comment below: tell me why you would want to make one of these projects. I'll pick a winner on Monday, December 9.

So leave your comment below, in black and white!

  1. Black and White is so classic and reminds me of my mom who was so classy. She was a 60’s fashionista with her white gloves spiked high heels matching earrings and necklaces and tailored dresses.

  2. Black and white are so stunning together. I’ve always wanted to make a black and white quilt, but haven’t yet. But Ddalaup should probably win this because it reminds her of her mom …..

  3. Pretty awesome quilt and pillow. I would love to win. I think they’d be a good challenge — no room to fudge the matched points when the contrast is so high — I’ve gotten lazy with my blendy fabric choices that cover a multitude of matching sins and wonkiness.

  4. I love the clean and crisp look of fabrics together. After the excesses of Christmas I alway look forward to freshening things up with a more minimalist approach in January.

  5. My niece is getting married this coming summer and their style is bold, like this Modern Patchwork pillow and quilt. It would be a homemade gift, which is the best to receive!

  6. Black and White is the new trend in decor now and my daughter-in law likes to use them in her decor. I would love to make her a quilt to use in her living room.

  7. My daughter told me yesterday that she wants a warm quilt instead of the pile of blankets she has on her bed. This would be perfect since black and white goes with everything and the design is so modern.

  8. What a beautiful, striking modern quilt. The contrast is wonderful.
I would love to win this kit and make it and the pillow to put on my bed to showcase my growing skills in making modern quilts. I belong to the Front Range Modern Quilt Guild in Colorado and this would be a project to help me move more in that direction.

  9. I’d love to be able to give this kit to one of my cousins. She retired a couple of years ago and is now a newbe on the quilting path. This looks like it would be great for her to practice on and she has grandkids who would love to get the results. Thanks

  10. I love the dramatic look of black & white, & it’s such a pretty design! I’m a quilting novice, so a kit with instructions would be a great way to get more practice.

  11. I love it, so modern and striking. Would look great in a very contemporary setting, like my son’s apartment, with his black leather couch and red accessories. Yum Yum!

  12. This would be perfect for my daughter. She has a black leather couch that is calling out for this quilt! It is both classic and contemporary. Please pick me.

  13. I love how striking the black and white look together! I’d like to make these because they’re already pre-cut, and I’m not the most accurate cutter yet 🙂

  14. Love it, and I know just who I will make it for, if I am the winner, as my granddaughter-in-law loves black and white! She also gave me a new great granddaughter last summer, so it would be my thank you to her!
I’m in the middle of packing to move, and no time to cut out a whole quilt and piece it together…

  15. Hi Kristine!
Thanks for this chance to win the directions and materials to make a new quilt!
I am a beginning quilter so I don’t have the “stash” aquired that most quilters have. I am truly enjoying “the process” and the products from my endeavors but find myself a bit stumped by “cash flow” for materials and sometimes even some of the patterns that I would like to make.
I gravitate to more bold patterns and colors so your kit really appeals to me and secondly I think I could handle the pattern!! 🙂 My home decor is ecclectic leaning to modern so these would fit in just about anywhere.
I really appreciate all the helpful information that I can glean from Quilting Arts Magazine and the e-newsletters! Thank you so much for all your hard work and thanks for the chance to win this kit!

  16. Beautiful patterns! Reminds me that my mum always encouraged our individuality, all 9 of us! My oldest brother’s room was done in black & white in our childhood home. He would love this as a gift!

  17. This kit would be perfect for my newlywed daughter’s first home! She loves this type of classic and graphic style. With winter upon us, a cozy quilt would be wonderful for cuddling under!

  18. I love black & white together. Bright colors make them pop and lighter colors mute the boldness. These would be a wonderful addition in my attempts to update my decor. Would love to win!

  19. I would love to make one of these black and white projects to give to my grandmother. She’s an avid quilter and taught me how to sew and quilt. She turned 95 this week and she would get such a kick out of these modern pieces!

  20. i would just simply love to win the quilt and pillow. these two appeal to me because of what they represent to me. the black crosses on white are like us on Christ, with Him we are totally surrounded with holiness & love. the pillow is somewhat the same – we the black lines, our lives are so up and down, but Christ is there to hold us up & support us no matter which direction we are choosing to go. both are beautiful in their simplicity & honesty of design.

  21. Black and white is my all time “go to” color combo…….every quilt I make has those two staples in my quilt diet…..it would be fun to make either the pillow or the quilt in my favorite two colors….without feeling like I have to add so many other colors. My home is now being remodeled and a wall quilt in black and white would be a wonderful addition to the entry hall…….it is classy in its’ simplicity!

  22. Combine Black and white,
    Out of sight.

    Combine White and black,
    There is no lack.
    Of possibilities.

    Together…beautiful
    Together….peaceful
    Together, there must be harmony.

  23. These are great looking projects and black and white goes with everything. They are perfect for making and giving. Precut pieces save so much time! I really enjoy sewing and giving so WINNING these kits would be awesome.

  24. Beautiful patterns! They remind me of how my mum use to encourage our individuality, all nine of us! In our childhood home my room was yellow, orange, brown, & white stripes! But my oldest brother’s room was various patterns of black and white. He would love the finished project as a gift!

  25. I want to make a quilt for my son who’s having surgery on both legs in February. He’s been so finicky on the colors but this – well he actually likes this combination. He’s going to be laid up for 3 months so with him, it will be much used and loved immediately.

  26. I am recuperating from a knee replacement and would like to get back to creating again. My daughter just announced her engagement and this would make a great addition to her hope chest. She loves black, white and red as a decor theme and this would be perfect.

  27. I like a lot of the modern quilts now but it took me a while to warm up to them. Chevron patterns seem to really be “in” right now. Since my daughter is much more modern that I am, I would make the pillow for her and her husband who, incidentally, paints very modern pieces .

  28. I love contemporary and I would make it to enter in our county’s annual quilt contest. It would give our “traditionalist” eyes a welcome change to more possibilities.

  29. I love contemporary and I would make it to enter in our county’s annual quilt contest. It would give our “traditionalist” eyes a welcome change to more possibilities.

  30. I love contemporary and I would make it to enter in our county’s annual quilt contest. It would give our “traditionalist” eyes a welcome change to more possibilities.

  31. I make quilts for the Salt River Indian Reservation Family Services. They are always appreciative of the quilts I deliver. Most of my quilts are for younger kiddos who need a hug, but there are older ones who need a quilt hug as well. This kit would make a wonderful quilt for an older child who also needs a quilt hug. Thank you!

  32. I would love to make this Balck and White Cross Quilt for my oldest son who will be leaving for college in a year! It would be nice to think of him with a handmade memento to remind him of home that is cool and modern–although this quilt would translate well into so many styles! Merry Christmas!

  33. love, love, love the black and white theme – with two daughters who don’t necessarily love traditional quilted items, the modern patterns are a bit more appropriate for their tastes! And for their mom (me :)) who is not new to sewing, but recently discovered that I enjoy quilting (read – newbie alert) – but have so much to learn, any inspiration and ideas are truly welcome!

  34. I would love to win this kit. I have 2 girls ages 12 and 15. This would make a great winter project for us to work on. I have my grandmas quilting frame and we could set it up and hand quilt in the evenings.

  35. I have wanted to do a black and white quilt for sometime but never found just the right pattern. And as I look I collect other projects that are piling up. But I would push this to the top of the pile, if I won it. And I love pre-cuts!

  36. What a great project and fabulous to have pre cuts. I’ve been shopping pre cuts these days and getting lots more quilting finished. Thanks for the opportunity.
    Kathryn

  37. WONDERFUL pattern and quilt kit! Oh my stars, how wonderful, thank you! I would love to win the kit and make this for a friend of mine. Thanks for the chance!! ~ Christina in Cleveland

  38. I would be so thrilled to win this is is already cut an with m,y hands that is the hard part an black an white is a favorite of mine did a rug once that was black an white an everyone loved it. Thanks for the chance to win.

  39. I’ve had the equipment to make quilts for well over a decade. I don’t have a great sewing machine but it works. So I think a kit would be just the thing to get me rolling to making quilts.

    Thanks for hosting a giveaway!

  40. The white negative space looks like the letter “H” and that is the first letter of my first born’s name. She often sees the world as black and white. I’d like to give her the quilt to honor her inner beauty.

  41. I would LOVE to win this quilt kit. I would make it for one of my grandsons, Max, who is a sophomore in college. He misses his beautiful mom (my daughter) a lot, she died 3 years ago. I can see him cuddled on his dorm bed with the quilt around him
    Thanks,
    Louanne

  42. I fell a few weeks ago and I am not able to drive yet. This kit would allow me to build something homemade for a special friend without having to do all the ” footwork ” LOL.
Thanks for your consideration. Nancy 🙂

  43. Dear Kristine,
First of all let me say, stunning in it’s simplicity! Am currently ‘trying out’ quilts with little to no color; i.e. black & white (perhaps do a periodic table of elements for my chemist son?). The quilt on my sewing room floor is titled, “What is black & white & red/read all over?” featuring b/w fabrics with text. Machine quilted in red thread. I chuckle that this is one of the first jokes I ever told, at about 6 years old, and kids today may not even get it?!
    Anyway, thanks for sharing.

  44. beautiful! beautiful! beautiful. Love the modern pallet and simplicity. I’d love to make the quilt for my son. He’s a newly graduated artist building an art print business.

    thank you for the offer

  45. I love this quilt. It reminds me that I need to keep a positive attitude. I was laid off as a social worker at Hospice in January 2012. It was the job of my dreams. When we moved to a new building in 2007, I made a quilt to hang in the foyer. It represented the cycle of life. Since being laid off I have been trying to make a career for myself sewing. I have taught classes and put some work on Etsy. Recently I’ve been approached about making a quilt, some tshirt throws, and my most exciting request is 2 baptism gowns from a wedding dress. I have tried to keep a positive attitude these last 2 years and finally there is a little flurry of requests that may be leading to more work. I would love to mark this potential turn of fortune by making this quilt to hang on the wall of my studio!!

  46. I have never made a black and white quilt or pillow…but the idea is very intriguing. Kona fabrics are one of my favorites, and I have even purchased Kona fabrics while vacationing in Kona, HI. I would love to win!!!

  47. I would love to make this quilt and pillow! I really love making quilts for family and friends and my niece would love this! I haven’t been able to make anything this year because my husband was “downsized” after working for them for over 20 years. Finances are tight and the budget doesn’t have room for extras. Thanks for providing the contest!

  48. My only daughter just got married last week, so I haven’t had ANY time this fall to sew, and I’m just itching for a chance to stay in and work on a new project this winter!

  49. Ever had a friend who is hard to buy for? I have one whose favourite theme song is “good ‘ole Collingwood forever”, and her team’s colours are black & white. This kit would be ideal and unique, as it would mean I could make her a gift rather than as usual buying one. Most other patterns available always include another colour to create a focal point, where as these let the focal point be the beauty of the stark contrast between black and white, whilst implying movement with the zig-zag effect in both. Thanks for the ideas and inspiration, I look forward to make them for her.

  50. I am a newbee at quilting. Have watched my mom for years and
decided it is time to join her. I would love to start with this
amazing black and white. I am getting a new sewing machine
for Christmas what a great project this would be to start out
    with.

  51. Well, they both are beautiful. Th is the addition of red. That said, I love, love, love, the chevron design on the pillow. I am expecting my first grandchild and have read that the first things that a baby is attracted to are the colors and shapes of black and white. The next color they are attracted to is thee addition of red. This is said to stimulate the brain in some way. Wouldn’t this pattern be fantastic for this? I can hardly wait? I am crossing my fingers.

  52. I have a “stash” of fabrics I love. I loved them when I bought them but with no project in mind. When I select a pattern for my quilt project, I never seem to have the right fabrics, therefore, I buy more…..Just the fabrics for that quilt and design.
With a kit (what a novel idea!), I would be ready to roll. The right amount of fabric and the right colors make starting easy.

I hope I win. What great prizes: the magazine, the pattern and the fabric!

I am a basic black and white person. No gray areas for me, please. I love the starkness and the contrast. Lots of symbolism, I like it!

    Thank you. Linda

  53. Black and white are the classic combination of colours to jazz up any room or piece of furniture to make them “pop”!!!!! I always try to add black and white together in any quilt project I make!!!

  54. Black and white quilts are my favorite. The pattern has that real classy appeal. My mom, who just turned 87, would love that quilt for her bed. Thanks for the chance to win the fabric and book.

  55. I love all the quilts my grandma used to make. I am trying to teach myself how to quilt. I love the way it looks so old fashioned ( like grandma used to make). I just wish I could have learned how to make quilts from her before she died. I am hoping this will enable me to kickstart my attempts at quilting.

  56. My niece purchased a tiny home and has been having a wonderful time decorating it. Her theme is black and white (and lots of glitter via chandeliers, etc.!) and she loves modern quilts. I would love to make this for her!

  57. The black and white cross quilt is lovely. I appreciate both the simplicity of design and the strong visual effect achieved in this stunning arrangement. I would like to make this quilt for my 36 year old daughter who recently lost her husband to brain cancer. Three months ago she moved with her six children to a new house and many of her walls are bare. With so much emptiness in her heart and home, I would like to fill some of that space with this gift of love.

  58. I have just completed a Hardanger project in black and white and have fallen in love with the combination. I would love to make a quilt in black and white for my daughter-in-law who uses the combination to decorate her home.

  59. I keep wanting to make decorations for my home and keep getting sidetracked into making things we actually need. Plus, with black and white colors it’ll blend with my cats (we have Siamese for white and tabbies for black).

  60. I would love to make this for my 70 year young mother, she loves the classic look of black and white and is always talking about how people don’t make things any more, its easier for them to buy them, but store bought things don’t mean as much.

  61. I would love to get one to make for my husband’s grandmother. She just turn 92 and she loves to get handmade gifts vs store bought ones. It would be a blessing to be able to make it for her.

    thanks for the opportunity!

  62. Black and white is such a good base for adding one colour. It makes any other colour looking good. I would love to start with a black and white colour project – and then go wild and crazy adding a splash of something else.

  63. Black and white is such a good base for adding one colour. It makes any other colour looking good. I would love to start with a black and white colour project – and then go wild and crazy adding a splash of something else.

  64. I am teaching a young girl to enjoy the art of quilting. This kit would certainly give her inspiration and send her needles flying. Such a lovely thing for you to do.

  65. What an interesting design, especially the pillow. I have wanted to make a black and white quilt for ages, and this might give me the inspiration needed! Thanks for doing this!

  66. I have loved sewing all of my 79 years. However, since I am now confined to a wheelchair the cutting is now difficult and am blessed to just be able to sit at my old Singer and sew. It would be such a blessing for me to win this kit as it could make it possible to sew a beautiful black & white quilt for my grandson. What a wonderful and productive way to spend many of my lonely hours. Thanks for this opportunity and blessing and Merry Christmas.

  67. I love chevrons and have been wanting to make a plus quilt for some time. I’ve also wanted to try using solids instead of prints all the time. I love the black and white and it goes with my living room décor!

  68. My daughter just moved into a new apartment. She is using black and white as her “color” scheme. I’d love to win this kit to make the wall hanging and pillow for her. It has been so long since I’ve quilted, that starting with pre-cut pieces would help quick-start my beginning to quilt again.

  69. I would love to make these. I am a novice quilter and these would help further my education. I could learn new techniques and make a pretty quilt and pillow at the same time, Black and white are classic and go with everything!! Thank you for the opportunity!!!

  70. Chic and sassy at the same time. I envision a new direction for the room that these projects land in – a guest room, or maybe the grandbabies’ play/nap room at Nana’s house! Love them!

  71. I love the clean look of black and white! My 12 year old daughter has just finished her first quilt, which she made for me as present. This would be a great project for us to do together for her room.

  72. Hi, I made my first quilt almost 50 years ago and was hooked from then on. I love new adventure and making a black and white quilt from a kit/pattern from the Modern Patchwork era would be a fantastic adventure.
Thank you for the chance to complete the adventure.

  73. I would love to make this project and then give to someone as a Christmas gift I think they would love it maybe my son or one of my grandchildren.
    Thanks for the chance.

  74. I would love to make this project and then give to someone as a Christmas gift I think they would love it maybe my son or one of my grandchildren.
    Thanks for the chance.

  75. The black and white quilt with all the pieces cut with instructions ready to go is a perfect item to get just in time to finish for the Christmas holiday. I would be happy to make it.
    imjeanne

  76. OMG! Black and white are my favorite colors for quilting! I usually include it in every quilt I make. Especially baby quilts since these are the two colors they can focus on first. And I love the chevron pattern.

  77. I think this would be a great gift quilt project, especially for a friend with a new home. It looks fabulous and reminds me of the possibilities when only using two colors to create a design.

  78. YIN and YANG, Crossroads, the ups and downs. That’s life and so this quilt and pillow are so much about life in all of its mystery, beauty and simplicity. Wonderful things to reflect on in the making of this quilt. Spiritual.

  79. I did this once, but it didn’t seem to show up, so I’m doing again, if this is duplicated, I apologize in advance….

I would use this kit to make a quilt for a displaced family being helped by the local women’s center. I am co-treasure of the women’s center guild in our county, to help make their transitional housing more of a home. I know firsthand just how much small acts of love impact these families in transition, and would love to use this quilt to help them make their home more special, and it would be a little hug from me every time someone used the quilt!

  80. My son, the last of our 3 kids, just moved out of our house, and has nothing for his apartment 9 hours away. This quilt is with his colors or lacks of colors, exactly what he likes.. It would be so wonderful to make it quickly and would warm up his new home.

  81. My goodness, you have a big decision to make! I taught myself to sew when I was six, then was away from it for a long time. I am now a novice quilter, who looks at designs in magazines and online every day, but I need something to get me sewing. I’ve wanted to make a chevron design for quite awhile, but I’m not sure how to go about it. A kit will help me learn. I must love black and white, because almost all of my stash is black and white.

  82. I am a quilting newby. Just finishing up my first one. I would love to try this project. I would make it for my best friends piano room. Love the bold modern black and white!

  83. I love this project – and it would make a stunning wedding quilt for my minimalist daughter! And bonus -it could be finished quickly, leaving more time for other wedding stuff (and more quilting!). Thanks for hosting the give-a-way!

  84. My daughter just moved into her first apartment, she would love the black and white and it would add a touch of “home-made” to her sparse decor! Thanks for the chance to win!

  85. As a new Quilter struggling with a new craft, learning a new way, but also a long time weaver, my eyes lit up when I saw the Black and White Cross Quilt. So familiar, so reminiscent of a weaving draft. But stitched! How could these two different crafts meet up so happily? Perfectly matched to add pop to so many decor styles (we have a Moroccan theme), too. Love it

  87. I’d love to make the quilt for my son and the pillow for my daughter! It’s great when you start with a kit with precut squares. You can just start sewing!

  88. I would love to make this quilt and pillow for my older sister. She is in CA and I am in PA and we don’t get to see each other much. It reminds me of her and would look great in her living room.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  89. We all have wishes and plans for gifts to others. What a great boost and support to be given a “plus” and the head start on our own thoughtfulness. It is like a thank you for a thank you!
    Catherine Kelly

  90. I would love to be considered to win this quilt kit and instructions. A long, long time ago, I bought a kit as a youngster to make a quilt and I never did, it was a Log Cabin design and I thought I could whip it out, but I have found, like with life, the good things happen in time, and as I am with my count cross stitch, the length of the project brings me joy, rather than finishing it.

    Hugs…Martha in Idaho

  91. I’d love to win because these fabrics and patterns make such a striking statement and would look great in my bedroom with my robin’s egg blue walls. And, it’s my birthday this weekend on the 8th and it would be such fun to win something wonderful. Thanks!

  92. Chevrons are so popular now, because they make such a statement. Love the jazziness of that pillow. Black and white stand the test of time. Proof of this: My daughter was married 20 years ago and chose the very edgy (at that time) black and white, with red accents, as her wedding color scheme. Two decades later, that clean combo is going strong.

  94. I would love to make both of these projects to give as Christmas presents to my daughter. She loves black and white fabric combinations and truly I just haven’t been able to think of anything to give her this Christmas. She’s a busy Mom of two young ones and her husband is working oversees until Christmas. This would help perk up her days.

  95. My sister just purchased the farmhouse, barn, outbuildings and 11 acres of the homestead my great-great grandparents settled when they came from Ireland to Wisconsin in the 1840’s and where my great-grandfather, grandfather and mother all grew up. She is in the process of refurbishing it and has designated a different color scheme for each of the five bedrooms. One of them is black and white so this would be perfect!!!

  96. I love making graphic quilts and this black and white cross quilt and chevron pillow are totally fabulous!!! Thank you for the opportunity to win such a wonderful prize!

  97. I’ve never worked with a kit – that sounds sublimely wonderful to have some of the hard stuff already done for you. Plus when I look at this quilt I see more than just the black plus signs – I also see white H’s and all kinds of cool things. Please please please, me???

  98. The quilt and pillow are chic yet classic designs. Any one would love to have these as part of their décor. As most people, I have a very busy schedule. It would be a treat, as a new quilter, to be able to make a quilt and or pillow in a weekend. I do many other projects but quilting seems to be a real art that I would enjoy mastering, someday.

  99. The pillow and quilt are very chic and classic at the same time. Not having much time in my busy schedule and being new to quilting it would be a great treat to make a quilt with precut fabric and be able to complete an entire project in a weekend

  100. I’d like to make the quilt because it looks like a beginner with only one wall hanging/quilt given as a gift to one of my daughters- in- law could complete this . I could give this quilt to my other daughter-in-law. I’m positive I could make the chevron pillow within a short time.

  101. The Black and White Cross Quilt and Chevron Pillow patterns are classics and by using these striking contrasting solid fabrics they have been elevated to contemporary must-have pieces. Can’t wait to get started 🙂

  102. Maybe it’s a black and white “Aitch” quilt? Whatever we call it, the quilt is striking, and the chevron pillow so bold… I think it would look great in my newly-painted green living room!

  103. I’m a Weaver, and very recently a Patchworker. I am just struggling a bit, and making a few mistakes, but enjoying the new challenges ( I like the precision required). When I saw the Black and White Cross quilt and the Chevron I felt like a was with a couple of dear old friends: the Weaving Draft and the Twill! And never mind that the “zing” in both of these striking designs would add a perfect focal point to our Moroccan theme at home. I would really enjoy quilting a “weave” design.

  104. The contrast provided between black and white is fantastic, and this would make a great gift for my brother, who loves a more simple look, while the pattern would provide an enjoyable challenge for myself in the making of the quilt.

  105. I live in a small town and we do not have a fabric shop. I order my fabric and patterns on line. I like non traditional quilt designs. I would love to win. I am happy to see these artistic patterns.

  106. How apt to offer something in black and white in the week of Nelson Mandela’s death. The symbolism of the strength and the struggle between two dominant “colours”, the cross and the winding chevron mirror this compassionate, forgiving and deeply intuitive man who may be described as the most human of beings of the twentieth century.

  107. WOW!! I am not a quilter although I flirt round the edge. My textile art art is mainly geometric so both these appeal to me. What a wonderful way to really get into ‘proper’ quilting – maybe the bug will hit me! I would be delighted to start with the kit. Thanks for the chance.

  108. I’ve been wanting to make a modern chevron quilt for ages! I even designed a pair of fingerless mittens in a chevron pattern, that’s how much I love that motif! 😀

  109. I *LOVE* giving quilts as gifts, and am feverishly (and joyfully — since I love sitting at my sewing machine and thinking about the loved one who will ultimately receive what I’m working on) finishing up this year’s Christmas gifts as well as keeping up progress on gifts for four loved ones with January birthdays.

I don’t deserve this beautiful fabric any more than any of the rest of these fine quilters, but if I’m blessed enough to win it, it will be lovingly used (sooner rather than later) and deeply appreciated. (And it will be the FIRST quilting item I’ve ever won! <3

Kind regards (and good luck to all!!!)

    Kimberly

  110. Life is full of plusses and minuses. I like that the quilt has just plusses! I would like to try to incorporate the chevron into the quilt somehow to make it my own work. Being a bit color challenged and paralyzed by free motion quilting, I think this kit would add several plusses to my quilting life. Then it can become a teen Kid’s Place quilt and be blessed to be a blessing.

  111. I have made a few black and white quilts, sometime adding one color to the quilt, love the look and never get tired of the combination–something very classic and beautiful about quilts in those colors, and endless patterns look so good in black and white.

  113. I have made several black and white quilts, sometimes adding one color to the combination. Would love to make the chevron –that looks so classical, beautifull!
I have been a traditional quilter all my “quilting life” but would love to make some of the quilts I see in modern quilt books and blogs-love the use of traditional patterns with a new twist. Guess I just love quilting!!

  115. My 26 yr old daughter is setting up house and actually loves my quilt work, she’s modern and this pattern is perfect for her new living room. I usually don’t use patterns or kits at all but this would be fast and right. She has to wait too long for me to create something new!

  116. Like the others, I’d love a kit and this is a good one for me to practice skills – black and white piecing would be pretty unforgiving.

I have a new machine I have NEVER used. I need a project!

But looking at all the entries, we are much the same – have special needs and loves. You must have a TOUGH CHOICE. So to help I am recommending:

    ……..Black and white crosses

    ……..following the chevron path

    ……..made for another.

I don’t know this person, but her poetic presentation is creative. She must be a good quilter.

  117. I love black and white and the graphic quality of this kit. I will make it for the wall as I have dogs and they sit on my quilts. But it is stunning and almost reminds of something Native Americans would make and use.

  118. I am a fairly new quilter and I have decided to try new patterns and ideas in a pillow size. This black and white chevron pillow is very dramatic! It would look stylish and modern anywhere, and once I figure out how to make them, I can make the chevron design in many colors.

  119. I have been trying to save enough black and white for a quilt for our living room which was just newly painted and the quilt would look great with it, thanks for the giveaway.

  120. I loved all of the projects in this magazine, but especially love black and white in such a great modern and easy design as this combination goes with ANY great accent color.

  121. It’a great to see quilting change through the years. Each generation putting their own spin on what makes them love the age old art of sewing scraps of fabric together to bring fun into their homes.. Ultimately quilting stays alive to be passed on to the next generation.

  122. OMG! This kit would have me stepping totally outside of my box. I only make scrappy quilts not from quilt kits. Never two colors. Winning this quilt kit would put me into a new quilting dimension and create a bigger quilting monster!

  123. So simple yet so stunning! My house is full of color, but I regularly use black and white prints to offset the colorful ones. The result is so much fun!
I’d love to make something like this to hang on the wall and POP through all the color. 🙂

  124. Kristine: Thanks for your generosity. I would like to work with a kit for a change in my quilting habits which is just forge ahead and hope for the best. I think the black and white are classic & “less is more.” I would be honored to win this prize. Thanks again.

  125. Not Able To Make Decisions! It would be wonderful to win this kit. I would like to make a project for my family but when I go into the fabric shops, my heart races and I almost pass out from over stimulation. Love those fabrics. A pattern and fabric that is already selected could help me get over my sewing block (play on words???). Feel free to address this beautiful piece to my address and I will have FUN finishing it.

  127. The Black & White Cross Quilt and Chevron Pillow kit would be the perfect addition to the black & white stamped Adinkra symbols roll pillow and mud cloth pillows I have made to decorate my son’s bedroom and inspire him to develop virtuious qualities in his character. Adinkra is a type of cloth made by the Ashanti people of Ghana. It is made with a thick commercial cloth and a thick black homemade dye. I created my stamps from cut leather afixed to cedar blocks. The stamp patterns have names and refer to Ashanti proverbs.
I incorporated the traditional Ashanti symbol of hope, symbol of power and wisdom, symbol for human relationships, symbol for the soul and the symbol for the proverb “you can always undo your mistakes” in my repeat pattern design. I would love to expand the inspirational display for my son by making the cross quilt and chevron patterned pillow. These symbols are also used in Ashanti designs. Thank you for inspiring me to make a black and white quilt in addition.

  129. I have learned the basics of quilting and currently using it to complete a basic blocks quilt. I have limited time to work on quilts and I would love to try out a kit like this for gift giving. The black and white patterns are so universal that this would fit with anyone’s decor.

  130. I want to make a quilt, but find the idea of all of the cutting a little overwhelming. I very much like the freshness of the black and white pattern and would would be proud to show it off as my first quilting effort. I want to start 2014 off by entering a new creative world, that of quilting.

  131. I so love black and white, in my fabrics, in the clothes I wear, etc. It’s just so elegant looking. I’d love to win the kit so I can make a quilt for myself, which I haven’t yet.

  133. Gosh…I call myself a “wannabe” quilter…have never made one, but dream about it all the time. Maybe this is the one I’m supposed to brave up to do and really try to accomplish. 🙂

  134. Black and White takes me back to the Golden era of movie stars and fashion. It makes such a simple but oh so bold statement. Color is great but I don’t need it if I am classical black and white. If that weren’t the case why do we still have upscale and uber trndy parties that are “black & White” only? Maybe a touch of a little sparkle in the form of some diamond look faceted jewels in just the right spot to really set this project off in style!

  135. My baby and my 4 year old have taken over the house!
With so many colors thrown around, this black and white project would bring some adult space back into my world. I would love to make this from time-saving precuts and keep for myself! Thanks for the chance!

  136. We’ll done Kristine, both projects are amazing and have beautiful quality! I am drawn to the quilt, it’s a quilt that should be made and displayed in a place of honor, preserved and protected.
What quilter wouldn’t love the opportunity to have these projects to make? And already ready to sit down and sew! I love that!

Today’s modern quilts are the heirloom artwork of tomorrow.

  137. This a pattern that would work for both my mum and dad, as its not too girly (which is what my father tends to think of most quilts). I would love to be able to make one they would both enjoy, specially as they both have a weakness for anything done by their children

  138. I am teaching my granddaughters how to sew. I have been looking for a kit for them. As they both love B&W, this is the perfect quilt. Thank you for the opportunity to win this.

  139. How Cool! My grandson would love this! He is ADHD and Autism. As I don’t have a job, getting this kit would really help. It is an easy pattern and only two colors which would help him to settle in at night. He is just seven. Thanks for your consideration! Have a wonderful evening!
