'In the Garden' Reader Challenge finalists announced

29 Jan 2014

Winter is a chilly time, even in some southern climes, and we often retreat to our homes and hunker down. The promise of spring helps to get us out of our shells, though, and winter is an excellent time to dream of the buds and rebirth soon to come. We were thinking of this, too, when, in the December 2013/January 2014 issue, we challenged readers to create an 8" x 10" art quilt based on the theme "In the Garden."

Our submissions mailbox was full of jubilant blossoms, curious critters, lush plants, and ethereal interpretations of the theme.  We received almost 140 entries and it was so difficult to select just a small handful.  Without further ado, here are the finalists:

Deb Runnels, "In the Beginning"

Vicki Conley, "Something is Coming"

Jodi Scaltreto, "From the Garden Mini"

Claire Passmore, "In My Grandmother's Garden"

Marianne Bender-Chevalley, "Flowers"

Priscilla Lotfy, "Rose's Garden"

Anna Viadero, "Wild Flowers"

Kathleen Baumann, "Just Being Awesome"

Dian Stanley, "Tiny Garden Jewels"

Cindy Richard, "Wild Poppies"

Judith Ahlborn, "Garden Whimsy"

Carol Kolf, "Morning Snack"

Congratulations to the finalists and thank you to all who participated in this challenge!

Next steps for finalists:

Your artwork must be in our offices no later than February 21, 2014, along with a flat shipping and handling fee of $15 (U.S. and Canada) or $25 (all other international). This fee, which must be paid in U.S. dollars, covers the shipping costs, packing materials, and handling for the return of your entry. Only cash, checks, or money orders can be accepted. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Interweave.

If you have not already done so, please label your quilt on the reverse with your name, email address, and title of the quilt. Also on the reverse, label the top of the quilt (a temporary label is sufficient) so we orient it properly. Include your return address inside the package.

If you did not do so in your original submission, please include a statement (around 50 words) about your quilt--the "story" of it, not the materials used (unless they are intertwined).

All finalists' quilts will be published, either on our website or in the June/July 2014 issue of Quilting Arts Magazine.

The entire piece and all of its packaging must weigh less than 3 lbs. and fit inside a standard shipping/mailing box or padded envelope for return shipment.

Finalists should mail their entries to:

Quilting Arts Magazine/Interweave
Attn: ‘In the Garden' Reader Challenge
490 Boston Post Road, Suite 15
Sudbury, MA 01776

We reserve the right to keep and display your "In the Garden" quilt until the week of May 12, 2014.
