Let's start Fall off right...With a giveaway!

21 Sep 2011

In New England there is a certain something in the air. The morning and nights are a little cooler, the leaves are starting to change color, and my need for quality quilting time is increasing.  Every year the cool weather inspires me to start crafting, and from what I hear many of you feel the same way! This weekend I plan to sit down and make a list of everything that I want to make in time for the holidays. My family (and close friends) know that they will most likely get a handmade something from me (last year I made lap quilts for 8 of them). Are you getting in the same gift making mode and looking for inspiration for the holidays? Check out the latest Gifts issue. I already have gotten some great project ideas from this issue!

Of course, you might need some new fabric to get you in the quilting mood, so let’s celebrate Fall with a little fabric giveaway! Leave a comment below sharing your favorite thing about fall, and I will randomly select a winner to receive an awesome bundle of Moda’s Little Apples fabric.

I will announce the winner on my next blog post!

Besides the cooler whether... I love the russtling of the leaves as they fall at the lake cottage, the smell of burning leaves, roasted marshmellows and bon fires with friends! Not to mention.. the perfect time to find those perfect leaves to seal in gel mediums to preserve them in an art inspired piece.

Fall is that time of year in which I really pay special attention to my surroundings.  It's the time of year I really notice all that Mother Nature is doing.

It's also the time of year I begin working in a new color palette, discarding the bright, hot colors of summer and turning to warm, glowing colors of fall.

Those Little Apples fabrics would be right up my alley.  I'd love to have a chance to work with them.

I doll up my little flower garden in the early spring, intending to do "a little something" every day to keep it looking good.  As the blazing heat of summer rolls in, though, I find I can't make myself go out and do much of anything with my flowers; the weeds, of course, take over!  Now that I'm sensing the tease of cooler weather on its way, I'm itching to get back out there and rake out the uninvited weeds and see my garden again as I intended it.

I raise my windows in the cool of the evening and enjoy the fresh air. I get up early to that first cup of coffee and feed the cows and chicks. Then after I have a little breakfast, I go out to sewing shop and create something for that someone special. Sometimes I even make myself that someone special and make something for my own home. I really enjoy making things for others to enjoy. Fabric and thread run through my veins. Just can't beat having that hand stitched quilt.

Growing up in Washington state, fall was my second favorite time of year! Nothing can beat growing up on the beaches, tide pools and cool forests of the Pacific Northwest! Fall is a special time, with trips to Canada, Victoria Island, and the mountain roads, lined with trees dressed in there finest glory. Apple trees are bountiful, gardens are chock full of late season harvest, and life is good. My mom always got the family quilts out of storage in the early fall, aired them out and made any repairs, or retied certain favorites that had seen better days. Fall was also a time to make new quilts. I loved sitting at her feet and playing with the pretty colored fabrics, helping her thread needles and baste the quilts on the floor. Fall is the start of my quilting year, I get very excited about new quilts, and memories of old quilts, and wonderful days filled with love and family.

Fall is my favorite time of year.  The colors enliven me.  It's the last hurrah of outdoor flowers and trees.  The cold of winter whites and grays and browns also enrich my soul.  It's  a time to snuggle into a wool sweater and a flannel lined quilt.  But just before winter... that riot of color, crisp air and breezes that rustle the leaves and blow out hair.

It's off to school time, while my child works hard, it is time for me. A time to settle in for sewing, baking, making art.  The work can be held close, dearly, because the heat of summer is gone.

My list of projects grow, sometimes out of proportion.     I remind myself of all want to do for all those lovely people in my life.  Autumn is a true reminder of all I have to be grateful for.

Thanks for the opportunity to put this into words.

Enjoy the crisp air,  Kimberly

a few of my favourite things are;

and the sound of crunching leaves below your feet

raking leaves into piles for kids (and dogs) to go play.jump and scream into

the harvest foods, apples and squash's and yummy baked goods that go along with these

Plus (maybe for us the most obvious) IT ISNT WINTER YET.

I'm with you Lindsay, Fall, like now, is when I take down that list of projects that I was sure I would get finished over the busy summer, like what was I thinking, and start the new list of Holiday and gift giving projects.  Over the years, have learned to scale by the scope of the projects so that I mostly get them finished, although if you open the closet, there does appear to be some left overs from the previous year.  Oh well, a head start for this year!

I was lucky to grow up in Upstate New York.  I love Fall.  I loved the colors that blanket the countryside.  The cool crisp air that was a welcome change from the humid summer.  Trips to the apple farm for fresh apples.  I remember picking apples and making pies and apple sauce.  Gathering the colorful leave and pressing them between sheets of waxed paper.  Gathering horse chestnuts and getting my brothers to drill holes in them so we could string them for necklaces.  Planning and helping Mom make our halloween costumes.  (usually took at least a month)  Halloween has been my favorite holiday for years.  Of course a really big reason I love fall is that my birthday is in the middle of October.  Now I live in southwest Georgia.  I still love Fall but I miss the northeast.   Now fall means peanut season ( I work in the peanut industry).  It also means all the little towns have their festivals, so lots of family fun to be found.  Plus fall kicks off the holidays.  To me holidays mean family.  Fall = home, family, fun and love.

A cotton throw makes the chill feel that alls-well and a hot drink warms one thouroughly. I love the chill in the air to make one's creative juice begin to wonder, 'what'll it be this year' when our dreams are turned into completed projects. Thanks bunches for the fun way to express ourselves and also have an opportunity at your fun contest.

To me the beginning of Fall marks the start of Quilt Retreats, Visits to all the Quilts possible in your area,  Quilt hoops, etc.

I have been missing these for several years.  I just relocated to San Antonio, TX from Puerto Rico. I was taking care of my mother, that has Alzaheimers. Because it's so hot most of the time, in Puerto Rico, Quilting like here in the states is not as popular.  We mostly make runners , pot holders and placemats.

Now that I am back to the mainland, I will be joining a guild.  I already joined a group of ladies that meet at our local Library.

My favorite thing about Fall, and this might sound a bit odd, is the scent.  There's this certain scent outside, I suppose it's a mixture of the leaves and the cooler temp's and cut grass and turned soil, along with a hint of apples, mature herb and veggie gardens and slight moisture.  Maybe it's just me but for 10 years I lived in Hawaii and every autumn I missed that scent terribly until I moved back to New England.  You really get it early in the morning, before everyone is dashing and driving around, in that quiet, "me moment".  I sit on the porch, close my eyes for just a second and take in that scent that has always completely calmed and grounded me.  Just a couple more seconds and then it's time to start the hectic day.  Too bad that Fall scent can't last more than a month or so but at least I get to have it again.
