New magazine! International Quilt Festival: Quilt Scene

13 Mar 2009

Whilst I was away at our QA TV taping, exciting news in the quilting world hit the airwaves via a press release. If you didn't hear the scoop, we're collaborating with Quilts, Inc., to create a brand new magazine!

Here are the important bits from the press release:

Interweave and Quilts, Inc. to Collaborate on New Quilting Magazine

Loveland, Colo. and Houston, Texas, February 25, 2009: On the occasion of International Quilt Festival’s 35th anniversary, Interweave, publisher of Quilting Arts Magazine, and Quilts, Inc., producer of the International Quilt Festivals, will launch a new magazine, International Quilt Festival: Quilt Scene. This special issue, to debut in October 2009, will capture the energy, beauty, and community of today’s quilt scene. Quilting Arts Magazine Editor-in-Chief and Founder Pokey Bolton is Editor of this new special issue publication.

“For years I have wanted to launch a traditional quilting magazine with a clean, fresh design—chock full of contemporary quilted projects and quilt news. I have yet to find a traditional quilting magazine on the market that appeals not just to seasoned quilters, but to the next generation—people like me, in their 30s, wanting to be a part of the quilt scene,” says Bolton, who is also Host of “Quilting Arts TV” on public television. “The 35th Anniversary of International Quilt Festival provides the perfect opportunity to both commemorate the heritage of our craft as well as look towards the future of quilting.”

International Quilt Festival: Quilt Scene magazine will feature gallery-style articles, artist profiles, quilted projects, technique-oriented how-to lessons, and a showcase of the top award-winning quilts from the prestigious International Quilt Association’s annual competition.

“We’re delighted to be working with Pokey and her team on a magazine that will showcase traditional quilts and quilting projects in a fresh, new way, as well as introduce a whole new audience to International Quilt Festival,” says Karey Bresenhan, Founder & Director of International Quilt Festival.

An International Quilt Festival: Quilt Scene-Inspired Giveaway on the Quilting Arts Blog!

To celebrate this momentous occasion, I am giving away these bundles of Moda fabrics in colors and prints that are scrumptious! Would you like some?

Hi Pokey, I filled in the survey. Congrats on the new magazine. I am a paper quilter, although right now I am working on a little 12x12" fabric quilt in response to a challenge. I hope the new magazine gives us some insight into the amazing artists that create quilts for the International Quilt Festival and tips/information for creating pieces that meet the show's criteria. I can already imagine some of the artists that would be featured in this magazine.

Hi Pokey. I just took the survey. I think this is a great idea for a Quilting Magazine. I love to look at the traditional quilts, and I appreciate the work and effort that goes into making them, however, even though I'm way past my 30's, I still like to make things that are more up to date and trendy! I can't wait to see the new magazine! I'm sure it will be fabulous! I love the idea of it being tied into the International Quilt Festival, too, as that will give some of us who can't get to the Festival a chance to see what goes on and who is there to show their art. Thanks!

I completed the survey and I would love to come to quilt festival. I really prefer the more contemporary quilts, bright colored fabrics, and art quilting. I think the magazine will probably create a lot of excitement. By the way it is not just the 30-somethings that like the more contemporary quilts. We 50-somethings still feel like we're in our 30's and drool over those fabulous fabrics too.

And since you will be using the "international" in your titles, it will be great to see some other "color" themes (as in Japanese) than we often do just in the US. Thanks!

I would like to add though, that i like to go to workshops where 1. if unable to finish a project, have gained the ability to execute the skills necessary to complete the project later on. and/or; 2. have been able test the use of a skill over and over so that after the workshop i would be able to practice alone until mastery.

I've been working on a lot of small art quilts recently. As I have subscribed to both Quilting Arts and Cloth Paper Scissors since the beginning and am never disappointed, the idea of a new magazine is extremely exciting. There is no one area I focus one rather anything to do with fabric and fiber gets my muse going. And there is no such thing as too much fabric so winning more would be a pleasure.

I completed the survey. I would like for the magazine to provide insight into the work process of the quilt artists in the shows. How they stay inspired. How they work with inspirational items in their journals, journal quilts, sketches, paintings until they are ready to select something for the big quilted piece. What they do to keep their skills sharp ... practice quilt sandwiches, doodles .... I would like to look at their sketchbooks, see the stuff that did not make it and why they thought so. I would like to know that they are human, too and how they deal with that. Oh, and the "eye candy" quilts and new show merchandise, too. ;)

Pokey wrote
on 2 Apr 2009 10:00 AM
Dear Cindy, I'm not quite sure the purpose of the pen on fabric so it's tough for me to answer. Do you mean a marking pen (one that erases)? Or do you mean a pen for signing quilts that is permanent and wont smear when washed? I tend to never wash quilts (since they are art quilts that hang on a wall), and use Sharpies all the time. Another option are Rub-a-Dub markers. Those are what Susan (Lucky) Shie uses quite a bit for journaling on fabric. Best of luck, Pokey
