I would give her a round or oval quilting hoop on a stand. if she doesn't like that she can trade it in on a large quilting frame to go in her sewing studio.

Tools for my mom: she does knitting, crochet, already so I'd get her needle felting equipment first, then some amazing yarns/fibres. I'd also get her some wonderful fat quarters to add to the project.

After seeing Marcia Derse's summer fabric line, a collection of fat quarters would inspire would entice any creative Mom to take up art quilting --- who can resist the tactile joy of fondling such beautiful fabric. Oh and perhaps a similar stash for yourself with a personal quilt challenge for you and your Mom.... how much fun would it be to see what both of you come up with from the same fabric stash. An assortment of needles for hand sewing and another assortment for machine sewing plus a reference guide for needles and a good storage case to keep them in, then add a variety of threads to go with them!
