Summer's End - Fall Fabric Giveaway

29 Aug 2012

The past three months have to go down collectively as one of the busiest summers of my life.

Leave a comment to win these fabrics.
On the home front, we've had out-of-town guests, significant birthdays, a burgeoning garden, and the usual family gatherings, days at the beach, and the chaos of getting everyone to their respective camps, summer jobs, and so on.

On the Quilting Arts side of life, we've prepared two regular issues plus Quilting Arts Gifts and the upcoming International Quilt Festival: Quilt Scene. I can't believe how hard the team has worked to bring you these fabulous issues.

But suddenly, it seems, it's time to send my kids back to school. Labor Day is upon us, and my thoughts are turning to fall colors and fabric projects. Although I'm sad to see summer go, I'm looking forward to a more regular schedule and evenings curled up with a handmade quilt and a cup of tea to ward off the chill.

What better time, then, to host a fall fabric giveaway? I have a roll of the aptly named Juggling Summer Zen Chic and a stack of Grand Finale by Sandy Gervais, both from Moda. Just leave a comment about your favorite fall fiber art project or activity. I'll choose a winner on Wednesday, September 5, 2012.

Good luck!

I am currently working on a few quilts to be given to the "Wounded Warriors" project . I have one that is multy colored and an afghan that I work on in the evening. When done I will be sending them to our troops. I like being able to give something back for all that they are doing to protect this great and wonderful country of ours! 😍

Thanks,

In the process of making a quilt with a modern edge for the local grange fair. Then I will donate it to be auctioned off to go to food for families that are having a difficult time feeding their dogs and cats. It is a shame owners are giving up their animals because they can no longer feed them. So sad.

Although summer still lingers, the days are getting shorter and there's a whisper of winter in the air.  Despite the fact that I don't want the snow and the cold weather, it gives me an excuse to stay inside and make stuff!

I'm new to quilting.  I recently completed my very first quilt for my first grandson.  He will be one next month.  I've had the fabric since before he was born, but was fearful of starting.  After numerous trips to the local library, a few book purchases, researching tutorials all over the internet, and finally signing up for a Craftsy class, "Quilting Quickly", I felt brave enough to give it a go.  Although it came out looking lovely, I'm not quite satisfied with my binding.  Those corners are tough!  Now I've been bitten by the quilting bug and can't wait to start a new project.  Maybe even something a bit more challenging than simple 5" blocks, or maybe not just yet.

My very most favourite fall activity is walking in the area near my home. On my walks I love to collect leaves, cones, twigs and seeds. The beautiful colours and vast diversity of the raw material is amazing. I also takes loads of photos, which I bring back to inspire me to find material for my projects. The light is also very different at this time of year, bringing a new hue to my photos.

If I can find a Chestnut tree, I also have chesnuts to roast when I get home, which is always a bonus!

I love leaves, especially Fall leaves, purple, red, orange and yes some of those stubborn green ones. This year leaves will be on a smaller scale. Mug rugs, dangles and maybe some wool needle felting. My playroom is in upheaval and I have to concentrate on Christmas stockings I promised my DD's for the last two years. Now I have two more to make!! Little boys are way cooler than I thought!!! Especially if they are your grand babies!!!! I live in the Pacific Northwest, so there is never a shortage of Fall leaves and I am looking forward to collecting them and stuffing them between waxed paper and ironing them, with my grandsons. Such a simple craft, but very satisfying with the munchkins and a great way to teach them about trees and which leaves belong to which kind of tree. In our neighborhood it is Cherry blossoms in spring and Maple leaves in the fall!!

Although I swear every year that I'll start earlier, fall is the season of holiday gift making, including Christmas, several birthdays, and hostess offerings. Throughout the year, I buy fabric and mark projects with certain gift recipients in mind; fall is when I dig into the cupboards and retrieve those fabrics and reevaluate those earlier ideas. It's my most creative time of year!

My fall project is going to be working with leaves.  I'll be using them to print on fabric, as "models" for fabric leaves to add dimension to some art quilts, and of course, to press for inclusion in mixed media and cards.

I would love to win these fabric stacks to make a quilt of my own to snuggle with when winter shows up.  Thank you for the opportunity.

There's nothing I enjoy more than receiving gifts that someone has taken the time to actually make for me.. For the holidays this year I have decided that I need to spread the Joy of gifts made from the heart, so I'm doing tapestry quilts for everyone.. It means so much more to have a gift that is thoughtful and heartfelt. Anyone can buy a present. But receiving one that someone has placed an effort into creating it for me means the world.

My mantra is "Don't forget the children" so when I have scraps, and sometimes when I don't I make things kids can purchase for those they love for the holidays.  All through college I would ask my classmates one thing; that when they were out in the world and making art, save the mistakes,, use up leftover  materials (whatever their medium)  and make something kids can actually buy for the holidays, or birthdays.  They love it and so do the recipients.

This summer we drove to Maine  and experienced my childhood anew.  I did forget just how COLD the ocean is down east... I now reside in Maryland.  I have collected shells all of my life... and this year the pickings were tiny and broken.  I wonder what this tells us about the oceans and the gifts from it.

I am encasing shells from my past in fabric and trapunto quilting around them.  The fabric takes on the interesting shapes of the shells with a hint of the colors melting through the thin, bleached looking fabric I chose.  I have often thought that what is inside is what counts... with people, at least.  So why not fabric.

This is the first September that I am choosing to encase things in fabric... I have thought about doing this ever since I read about Dianne Savona's work in the Fiber Arts Magazine about two years ago.  I had let my QA subscription lapse, and it is already been replaced with the next issue, so I am with out that opportunity. SIGH.  I did re up my subscription, but alas I am too late for the QA article.

So there you have the long answer to what fun activity I am doing this fall... add to that I am bundling up flowers in fabrics to try out some eco dyeing.  There is so much more time once school is back in session... and that is how I define Autumn.

Happily fibering, Kimberly Field

The juggling summer zen fabric reminds me of my family's trips to Zuma beach this summer.  As far as the eyes can see on a sparkling summer day are the colorful umbrellas of strangers' beach homesteads for the day.  Most of them end up, at one time or another, flying off in the breeze, and there is great animation among the homesteaders as they retrieve the naughty umbrella.  Summer transitioning to fall and back to school is truly the grand finale!.  I would love to make an umbrella beach scene art quilt with these luscious fibers.

i recently made a bed runner for my daughter's best friend, Becky.  i used 3 leaves from outside my window by overlapping them and then tracing them onto unbleached muslin.  i used 2 different shades of orange and 1 of yellow to outline the stems, veins and outer lines. i pieced the embroidered blocks with an orange batik for the borders and using the saame batik for the backing.  as soon as my daughter gabriella saw the runner, she informed me that she wanted a quilt made exactly the same way.  suffice it to say that i am now working on that quilt.  i love working with fall colors because of their brillience and fire.  the combinations using fall colors are endless.

My living room/dining room is filled with rusts, golds, greens, browns, warm wood and stone.  Giving our cold winters here in Wisconsin, I think a quilt to hang over the sofa in front of the fireplace is inevitable.

I have so many different projects I enjoy, it's difficult to pick only one. I love sewing with luscious 100% cotton quilting fabrics! Clothing, costuming, wall hangings. The wall hangings I make use Indo batik panels, framed with complimentary or contrasting colors. Then I sew a back on them, add ribbon tabs to hang them from a dowel. Never ending possibilities! I want to make a artisan duster for fall in various crazy quilting and an other using some stunning Japanese quilting fabrics. :-) Happy Quilting!

I'm not sure things I create are necessarily within the definition of 'fiber art' as I don't mix medias like fabric and yarns etc. in one project although I suspect as my Grandchildren get older I'll do some of that again.  Right now however, I am usually busy this Fall about to make slippers for myself and am working on a few quilts. I also am going to be making some toys and bibs etc for my 6 month old Granddaughter who is living here with us and her parents right now.

My favorite fall fiber art project is making a Thanksgiving table topper using the gorgeous colors and patterns associated with this time of year. Fall is the one time of the year when I actually spend time and effort on a project for a special occasion. For my Thanksgiving table toppers, I use different techniques or a combination of techniques each year. One such project, given as a gift, combined counted cross stitch, Hardanger, quilting, and was edged with my own version of lace made by needle tatting.

At the moment I am not working on any fall projects as it has been a very stressful year.  This spring my husband had a mild stroke and was diagnosed with liver cancer and died 2 weeks later.  This summer my daughter in law who had cerebal palsy and trouble coping with the arrival of her only child committed suicide.  Then just this past week my olderst daughter gave birth to her first child.

So I am just now getting back into checking out quilting websites to see what is new and exciting and hope I can use the info to create some new memories.

Just moved to a new home which potentially has a REAL STUDIO space - have I died and gone to heaven? Time to get very serious about setting up and creating this Fall after yrs. of putting it off for other reasons, and can't do that without more fabric, can I? Fall, more than Spring, is my time for new beginnings, echoing my childhood love of starting school with a brand new box of crayons, new shoes, new books and usually new friends, as we moved alot to different parts of the country. But Fall has always been my sentimental favorite season, and as I age, the colors of Fall have grown on me. Would be nice to have some fabric in those colors to add to my stash!

Fall colors - my favorite, even if springtime.  I notice many others agree.

If I won I'd add the luscious fabrics to my stash, which Never has enough -  (oh yeah?)

I'm getting older now, what to do with all my fabric?  I needed it all at one time, and still do, but time's going by and...

I know! - I'll hire someone to mop and clean while I work with the fabric.  Yes, that's what I'll do.  But even then...

How much is a workable stash?  How much is too much?  How to divide and organize and recognize what may be necessary for the future...?

I love to go back to Colorado to the Mountains around the Denver area, Fort Collins, in the southern area if possible to collect a variety of natural resources that I can use to find different textures, designs to imprint onto different fabrics.  I lived the first of my 25 yrs in and around Denver so find myself going that way in the fall if possible.  I have been living in Southwestern Nebraska for over 30 yrs and explore throughout Nebraska for other found treasures.  I just love to paint and explore new methods to enhance fabric that I can pass on to whomever finds a piece they like.  I am looking forward to this year around where my grandson lives so we can continue our loving nature trips.  He is 3 this year and looks at everything so differently.
