Make Quilted Gifts for Mom - Free Fabric Friday

24 Apr 2014

Any mom will tell you: from a salt dough hand-print paperweight to a beautifully stitched lap quilt, gifts from the hand and the heart are the best.

quilted gifts moda fabric meadow friends deb strain
Meadow Friends fabric by Deb Strain for Moda.
With Mother's Day coming up, I thought I'd share some handmade gift ideas for someone special in your life: mom, aunt, daughter, or friend. And, one lucky commenter will win some free fabric from Moda to use to create his or her quilted gifts.

Mug rugs are easy gifts to make. Add a pretty mug, a canister of tea, or some homemade cookies.

Artistic moms will love a handmade gift of a one-of-a-kind sketchbook cover.

Set a pretty table with stitched napkins pieced from fat quarters. If you're feeling ambitious, add a matching table runner.

If you're looking for gifts for quilters, you can't go wrong with an easy, elegant pincushion. I know I never have enough!

Not much time? How about stitching up some painted hearts for mom?

From the time I was given an allowance, I spent a portion making Mother's Day special for mom. The second to last present I made her was a Cathedral Windows pillow after dad died.  I knitted her an old-fashioned stocking too, but she died before I could give it to her. Now both items have returned to me and I think of her every time I use them.

My mother loved my handmade gifts no matter how large or small.  I miss making things for her since she passed on 2010.  Now that my daughter is married and has a family, I enjoy making handmade gifts for her.  Again, these gifts don't have to be big or extravagant, but she knows she is thought of.  This is particularly important since she is thousands of miles away, living in Japan.

Potholders and mug rugs are already in the works.  My mom passed away years ago but there are plenty of 'moms' in my life that have don't have family close by or maybe just need a little love shown to them.  So a good excuse (if you need one) is to sew for all those moms you may know who would be blessed by a handmade gift from someone.

I love the idea of using every bit of fabric left from a project. It is a challenge I relish. One day as my sister and I were trolling the fabric shop; (I call it trolling because I unconsciously drag my hand over every bolt of fabric, touching each one as I pass by) she found a piece of fabric in the drapery department that she loved but was not sure how to use it. She bought it anyway. Now years later, she rediscovered the piece of fabric in her stash, but did not remember what her original plan for it was. She wasn't even sure she liked it anymore so she gave it to me. I used it to make a swimming tote, mugrug found on this website, table runner and a pincushion, using up every last scrap including the threads and frayed ends. I used those to stuff the pincushion. I presented these gifts to my sister and she was delighted, remembering fondly our  happy days trolling the  fabric shops.

My mom always enjoys me making things for her, crocheted shawl, knitted dishcloths and dishtowels, sewing her clothes, or painting/drawing a picture. Anything will do just incorporate your talents. If you sing record her a song, if you are good on the computer make her a card and download her a song on disk. No matter what it is if it is from the heart then it is perfect.

Those are some great suggestions.  My latest Mother's Day gift was for my mother-in-law who has Alzheimer's.  I made a quilted texture blanket for her "baby" doll that she often carries with her these days.  As a mother of 8 boys she put in her time with babies and loved that our first was a girl so she could finally sew cute dresses.  The touch quilt provides sensory stimulation and her's includes snippets from dresses she made for my daughter.

Such a cheerful collection of fabrics - who wouldn't love to get something made from these fabrics - and what fun they would be to create a gift from the heart!

Mom taught me the value of making things by hand.  She always got my first project and then my best project.  Loved working with beautiful fabrics.  thanks Moda!

2 years ago I made my mom a quilt using her favorite flower, the orchid, using pastel purples. She loved it, then a quilt for my oldest daughter using spring colors with inspirational sayings on them, she uses it cuddle up to read her books or to do homework. I love making quilts for others.
