Reader Challenges

"What If?" Reader Challenge

We've all asked ourselves that great old question a thousand times, "What if?"

What if you hadn't dropped your groceries outside the food market and your future spouse wasn't there to help you pick up the apples and spilled carton of milk? What if your parents hadn't moved across the country when you were five, and you hadn't discovered your lifelong passion for theater? Or, what if today you decided to drop everything, take a huge risk, and pursue your lifelong dream? What would your life look like if you did?

Welcome to our "What If?" reader challenge! We invite you to create an art quilt that depicts a chance meeting, a reflection on a seminal moment or circumstance that changed the course of your life, or a wish to pursue a dream or goal. We will show some of our favorite entries in the August/September 2012 issue of Quilting Arts, online in our editors' blogs, and possibly even exhibit some at upcoming quilt shows.

Here's how to enter:

  1. Create a 12" x 12" art quilt featuring your "What If?" interpretation. The entire quilt, including binding, must measure 12" x 12". It must be three layers and quilted, either by hand or machine or both; it must be bound or zigzag stitched closed and have a sleeve on the back.
  2. Any embellishments must not protrude more than 1/2" from the quilt.
  3. The entire quilt must weigh no more than 1 lb.
  4. The quilt may be made of alternative fibers (such as paper), but it must be quilted, consist of three layers, and be either bound or closed along the edges.
  5. Your entry must be free of any text or images that are protected by copyright, unless you have the expressed written permission from the person or institution that holds the copyright and you provide that written permission with your submission. (It's a good idea to steer clear of commercial imagery.)
  6. To be considered for the challenge, send two low-resolution (each less than 1MB) images of your entry (one of the entire art quilt, and one of a detail of the art quilt) via email by Monday, April 30, 2012, to challenges@interweave.com, with the words "What If?" in the subject line. Please include your name, email address, phone number, and a brief explanation of your piece.

Note: Please do not "zip" your files and be sure to send jpegs.

  1. On Friday, May 4, 2012, Assistant Editor Ellen Seeburger will post the names of finalists on her blog at quiltingdaily.com.
  2. If accepted as a finalist, your artwork must be in our offices no later than Friday, May 18, 2012, along with a flat shipping and handling fee of $15 (U.S. and Canada) or $25 (all other international). This fee, which must be paid in U.S. dollars, covers the shipping costs, packing materials, and handling for the return of your entry.
  3. The entire piece and all of its packaging must weigh less than 5 lbs. and fit inside a standard shipping/mailing box (no larger than 12" x 4" x 14") or padded envelope.

Finalists should mail their entries to:

Quilting Arts Magazine/Interweave
Attn: "What If?"

490 Boston Post Road, Suite 15

Sudbury, MA 01776

Note: By submitting your reader challenge entry, you are authorizing Interweave Press LLC to publish your project in upcoming publications and promotional materials, on our website, and in other Interweave e-media, as well as to possibly display it at shows. We reserve the right to keep and display your "What If?" pieces until the week of November 12, 2012. We will be shipping the quilts back during the last two weeks of November.

"From Sketch to Art Quilt" Reader Challenge

They say a sketch a day keeps the inner critic away! Well, that isn't quite the common saying, but we'd certainly like to coin it. Honing your sketching skills and drawing daily (even for just five minutes) will help make you become a more observant and robust fiber artist.

Welcome to our "From Sketch to Art Quilt" reader challenge! We invite you to sketch a subject of choice then create a small art quilt based on your sketching observations. We will show some of our favorite entries in the June/July 2012 issue of Quilting Arts and possibly even exhibit some at upcoming quilt shows.

Here's how to enter:

1. Choose a subject of choice to sketch. Sketch a drawing on a piece of sketchbook paper (any size paper is fine). Color and black-and-white sketches are both acceptable. Your sketch does not need to be a literal interpretation of the subject matter, in fact we invite you to explore a creative perspective.

2. Create a 8" x 10" art quilt based on your sketched observations. The entire quilt, including binding, must measure 8" x 10". It must be three layers and quilted, either by hand or machine or both; it must be bound or zigzag stitched closed and have a sleeve on the back.

3. Any embellishments must not protrude more than 1/2" from the quilt.

4. The entire quilt must weigh no more than 1 lb.

5. The quilt may be made of alternative fibers (such as paper), but it must be quilted, consist of three layers, and be either bound or closed along the edges.

6. Your entry must be free of any text or images that are protected by copyright, unless you have the expressed written permission from the person or institution that holds the copyright and you provide that written permission with your submission. (It's a good idea to steer clear of commercial imagery.)

7. To be considered for the challenge, send three low-res (each less than 1MB) images of your entry (one of the sketch, one of entire resulting art quilt, and one of a detail of the art quilt) via email by Friday, March 16, 2012, to challenges@interweave.com, with the words "From Sketch to Art Quilt" in the subject line. Please include your name, email address, phone number, and a brief explanation of your piece.

Note: Please do not "zip" your files and be sure to send jpegs.

On Monday, March 19, 2012, Assistant Editor Ellen Seeburger will post the finalists on her blog at quiltingdaily.com.

Use any materials and techniques that you choose. We suggest techniques like painting, stitching, printing, stamping, stenciling, embroidery, and beading.
