Can anyone recommend a method of preventing people from handling quilts when they quilts are hung unsupervised in a place such as a public library?

Diane,

Quilts by nature are something that people want to touch, so without round-the-clock supervision in a public place, I recommend:

-A large (8" x 10") sign that is easily legible that says, "Please keep hands off the quilt. Thank you."

- The quilt roped of with waist-high poles and rope. That usually sends the message!

Good luck...
