Six fiber artists and a potter just completed a five week show today.  In MN, in 2008, it was voted that we increase the sales tax to include funding for arts and heritage.  The show was sponsored by The Crossing Arts Alliance which promotes the arts in our geographical area and by a grant from the MN arts and heritage fund.  The gallery is one that the Crossing Arts Alliance maintains.  They take a 25% commission on sales.  We took turns staffing the gallery so that visitors could speak with an artist.  This was our second show.  The attendance was great.  If anyone is interested in the gallery set up or our art, go to Joey Halvorson's Facebook photo gallery "Conversations with Cloth" to see 116 photos.  The event kicked off with an opening artists reception.  On day two, one artist did a two hour demonstration at the arts center.  I made books which showed step-by-step photos of process followed by a fabric sample.  The following were included:  deconstructed screen printing; thermo-fax printing; discharge by different agents; shibori; paper lamination; flour paste resist; low immersion dyeing; addition of color using inks, paints, water soluble crayons and pencils, and Shiva paintstiks; and painting Phil Beaver style.  All the art was original.  People were amazed at what can be done in the fiber arts arena.  A third show is being planned.  Shows keep us motivated to continue growing as artists and to create art from the fabric we make.  This show definitely had an educational element.  We had to justify receiving a grant!  The Crossing Arts Alliance had a closing celebration last evening because the organization received a large grant.  A state legislator was present so we had a chance to say thank you to someone who is on the committee that chooses where money will go in the state.
