Make your way to Oxford, Mississippi, January 20-22 for the 2nd annual Fiber Arts Festival! The festival is hosted by the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council and Knit 1 Oxford, at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center. Live animals will be on site for demonstrations featuring artists that cultivate their own fibers from such fiber-bearing animals as: llamas, alpacas, goats, and bunnies. Due to the success of last year, an additional amount of classes and workshops have been added to the agenda. Classes for children are free, so bring the kids for an educational and artistic weekend. Then perhaps you have the mad skills, fortitude and sense of humor to be a fieeeerce contestant on Project Iron Quilter, Season 2! The Tompkins County Quilters Guild is once again hosting Project Iron Quilter on Saturday, October 1^st at the Traditions & Beyond Quilt Show at the TC3 Field House in Dryden, NY. We challenge you to MAKE IT WORK!

Project Iron Quilter is a fusion of two guilty pleasures, Project Runway and Iron Chef (the original Japanese version - so over the top!). Contestants dash for fabric and race to create a quilt that fits the secret theme in only 3.5 hours under the watchful eyes of interested show attendees! Viewers vote for their favorite while Jonathan Holstein and Cathy Klimaszewski select the winning quilt and award its creator the title of "Iron Quilter"! Immediately after the awards, Peggy Haine will auction the quilts with all proceeds benefitting the Tompkins County SPCA. Project Iron Quilter Season 2 is going to the dogs! And cats!

You must be at the TC3 Field House in Dryden, NY on October 1, 2011 to be a participant. Intrigued? Sequim, WA - The North Olympic Fiber Arts Festival invites entries for "Hand-me-downs and Pick-up-sticks-Childhood Narrations & Competitive Creations," a juried fiber arts exhibition filled with artworks telling stories of growing up. Cody, WY - The Yellowstone Quilt Festival is accepting entries for their 2011 show. Quilts may be submitted in a variety of categories. The entry fee for a judged quilt is $7.50 per quilt and the fee for an exhibition-only quilt is $3. There is a show limit of 130 judged quilts. Once that number has been reached, entries for judged quilts will no longer be accepted, regardless of date received. Deadline for entry: September 3, 2011. Entry forms for the 2011 African Folklore Embroidery Challenge are now online at www.aflembroidery.com THE GRAND PRIZE is $500 cash, 2^nd prize $50 and 3^rd prize $25.00. All entrants will receive certificate of participation and be considered for inclusion in a new book.

All entries will be on display at the International Quilt Festival in Long Beach at the African Folklore Embroidery Booth. July 29^th - 31^st 2011, Long Beach Convention Center, California and at the American Sewing Guild Conference in Los Angeles, Aug 19^th-21^st 2011.

Adivice: Art Quilts and Quilt Shows

My quilting guild hold a show every two years, the next will be in 2012. Last year we added a category for Art Quilts and Mixed Media. Our main judge seemed not to fully get Art Quilts. She a great judge in the tradition style, no complaints that way.

We are now working on the next show and would like to help to reduce some of the confusion for traditional judges when judging Art Quilts. What advice would give? We need help in clarify the differences and the similarities between the two styles.

Interweave/Sew Expo Puyallup

I just spent two days at the Sew Expo in Puyallup, Wa. This is supposed to be the biggest Sewing and Quilting Expo in the entire United States.

I was surprised a number of companies were not there...there were three products I wanted, that I ended up still having to order online.

I also wondered why I did not see Interweave represented?? The show is about all kinds of sewing and textile art...I see such a market up here and am surprised while sitting in lectures about how unaware some fellow shoppers are...things they might be interested in if only introduced.

So my question is: Will Interweave ever come to Sew Expo?

As an aside to my question-- I did find one product that I think is really going to pull me forward into art quilting and some newbies out there may want to check it out-- It's a photo mosaic quilting software called:

Rhythmic strains of music, the flow of language, lithe dancers, or public change and social advocacy; all are examples that encompass the meaning of movement. Are you startled by a sudden movement, drawn in to the quickly moving plot of a good book, or feel the pulse of your heart as bloods flows through your veins? Military maneuvers, the inner workings of a watch, and a well-oiled machine all portray this basic necessity of life: movement. We invite you to share your interpretation of Movement in quiltart form.

BERNINA & Quilting Arts "Stitch This!" Update

We are very pleased with how the BERNINA aurora “Stitch This” challenge is progressing! There are a number of beautiful quilts that people have created, and it’s exciting to see so many people voting for their favorite ones.

We realize the time and effort people took to create their pieces of quilted art. We did, however, need to excuse an entry from this challenge as the artist unknowingly did not comply with the rules. It was a beautiful quilt, but in fairness to all, we needed to disqualify it based on the fact that the swan image used did not meet our requirements. We thank the artist for being so understanding and we apologize for any confusion that this may have caused her or others.

The participation of everyone is greatly appreciated and most importantly I hope everyone is enjoying themselves.

As we enter the final stretch of this challenge, we are excited to see what the outcome will be, and who will be named the winner of a brand new BERNINA aurora sewing machine!
