Sustainable fashion is about fiber choice, environmental concern and ethical consumerism as opposed to the fast fashion marketing that overwhelms us . Art by nature is fairly indy and expressive and reFashion (aka upcycle and recycouture) is both.

A vest done in Rosemary Eichorn's Asilomar workshop ... dedicated to Shiva

Hi everyone; I'm new to the Online Quilting Arts and am looking forward to getting to know more artistas!

The theme is Cryptozoology (animals which are considered to be legendary or otherwise nonexistent by mainstream biology, think big foot, the Loch Ness Monster, and the like). I like how it looks so far, but I think that it needs more done to it. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can add to it? I want to keep it so that it is machine washable and can go in the dryer so I don't want to add something like foil or a lot of beads.
When she showed it to me I looked at it for a long time and then she said "are you going to paint on it?" My answer was either that or something more like painting with fabric. That was several months ago and I wore it a few times this spring, but now it sits in my closet -- just like it was when I brought it home. I also have a plain denim jumper I've been wanting to "jazz up" for several years.

So, what's the problem? Well it isn't really procrastination -- it's more like fear. I really like that coat and I don't want to "ruin" it if something goes wrong. Same with the jumper.

So does anyone here get artistic with ready-to-wear? How do you get yourself to just jump in and do it?

Themed Garments

I thought it would be fun to talk about themed garments. The Bernina Fashion show is finished, but it is always fun to do garments to a theme. They can be the type that take 6 or more months to make like the Bernina ones, or they can be a little less intense.

Here is a link to a themed garment I did. It is based on WWII and "Make Do and Mend". I called it "Make Do in WWII" I "pretended" I was in WWII and only had an inherited tablecloth to amke a suit from. However, it was made from linen which I then sewed satinstitch scallops round the edges.

Any other themed garments out there?

Refashioning garments

There is a new trend for buying up charity shop garments (or even sheets and curtains!) and refashioning them into quite trendy garments. There is a cool website set up by a lady in Australia where some refashioner's attempts are being posted. Wardrobe Refashioned It is actually getting people sewing. It started with the blog.

I think it is a great idea. I also think it is fun to take things one step further and add artistic embellishments. Some of the girls are doing that, like to cover stains or t-shirt sayings they don't want.

Recently, after being at a workshop at Houston taught by Traci Bautista (Who wrote Collage Unleashed) , I have started refashioning and painting some clothes. I have some other bits I bought to change as well.

For instance, here is a fun skirt I enjoyed altering. Look in the gallery under Jeans skirt makeover. (I am not sure how to copy the links to several photos).

Anyone else into the refashioning idea?
