I need a pattern to sew or quilt a hat band for a straw hat. I bought a very large brim straw hat to wear in the pool, but it scratches my forehead. Does anyone know how to sew/quilt a hatband for the inside of a hat?
Hi keys4mib,
I would just use a measurement of your head or from the inside of the hat itself to make a 2 1/2 inch strip to sew on the inside of the hat. That's what I would do.

Hatbands are traditionally grosgrain ribbon sewn to the inside of a hat, just where the brim and crown meet. If you want to do a softer band, measure the inside of the hat, make it in the fabric and technique of your choice, and sew to the inside, again where the brim and crown meet. It would probably be better to hand sew it, since it's straw and might be difficult to maneuver in a sewing machine. Also, be careful not to make it too thick, as that might make the hat too small to wear.
