getting permission to use a trademark in a quilt

i got an idea from a tech toys magazine which showed an ipod with apps.  is using apps in the public domain or do i have to ask permission from each company?

I do work with companies who have apps, and those apps are definitely trademarked and you would need their permission to use them in your work.
