I have inherited my Grandmother's hand painted quilt. When mom passed away, I found it on a top shelf in her closet. It has several stains " looks like rust" , can I put this quilt in the washer or dry clean it. I can remember when my Grand Mother quilted the quilt. The squares are hand painted birds and flowers. Grandma died in 1974, who knows here mom had the quilt. I have taken pictures, if needed. I would guess the quilt is late 60s' or very early 70s. I really want to preserve the quilt. My local quilter friends looked and said as more skilled quilters. Any help would mean a whole lot to me and my daughters. Thanks, Butch L.
Hi Butch L.
Without knowing the type of stain, and your desire to preserve the quilt, you could perhaps take the quilt to a local museum where someone who works in preservation could assist you. We would not want to tell you to wash the quilt only to see it ruined. I would talk to an expert in fabric preservation, and a local museum might be your best bet.
