With the hand-dyed fabric I received from Quilting Arts and another scrap of hand-dyed fabric, I pieced a row of irregular wedges. I pieced another row using two batiks. I decided to glue down the right sides of these two rows so the raw edges could have their say. With a button and piece of elastic, both metallic gold, I formed a sun with emanating light. I added pieces of black sparkly ribbon to make three vertical lines among the raw edges of the batiks. I discovered my concept...on my staycation, I've walked around our pond nearly every evening, when the heat of the day has subsided a bit. The colors of the setting sun blend together like watercolors in the sky. The rays play on the surface of the pond and all the plant life. The summer breeze and changing light cause all forms - airy, watery, solid - to continuously transform. Thank you, Quilting Arts, for the beautiful piece of fabric and a very rewarding project.
Dollie is cut from the cabled front of a felted sweater I found at the local Goodwill. The outfits are a mix of needle wet felted sweaters and wool yardage. The button is a VERY old dime from my great-grandmother's button box - thought it an appropriate way to hang the purse. :-) As I live in the Haight Ashbury / San Francisco, Dollie has both her downtown outfit, complete with pearls, and weekend wear, including polymer clay iPod. Buttons attach the outfits to Dollie.

The quilted background is cotton/wool batting with Ritz dye -- from a
Quilting Arts article (can't remember the issue), and wet felted
sweaters.

I had fun with this one, and I hope Dollie gives you memories of your days with paper dolls!

Artists were challenged to express their spiritual belief etc. through any medium. My piece is about the sense of a protecting spirit, a guide, I find in the mountains, and particularly in the winter when skiing. It is as though the mountain ridge and peak is a presence, holding each of us out on the mountain. The words are critical to this -- and likely hard to see here! They are quotes from the famous and not so famous...Hebrew about "going to the mountain," New Testment regarding "protection like a rock." French text is that of René Dumal, regarding acting below by what one has learned by being above. And words of a couple of pro big mountain skiers, about why they do what they do, in the face of the risks, and the sense of unity and community. And the "sun" over the head/peak is my nod to the iconic art of the Madonna through the ages.

Size: about 15 x 22.

Materials / Technique: wet and needle felting, quilting, ink jet printing, embellishment with beads, needlework, hand made "chenille" strips

Fibro does not show itself on the outside too readily.

Everything in this quilt is done by hand.. the batting is an old wool blanket. There are over 300 buttons as well... (I had 500 but decided it was too much so took about 200 off) some kind of quirky, like most people are :) The ladies are faceless and I think that speaks volumes about Fibromyalgia. Most of us are faced with people that don't believe we are sick, including doctors who sometimes tell us it is all in our heads.

It took 2 months to complete.

What I have not done but intended to in the beginning was to add all the different things you hear from people who don't have fibro like.... 'it's all in your head', 'you're just lazy' and my favourite from my doctor at the time.... 'what do you expect me to do, you have fibro?'

This piece started out with playing with paint on fabric. Later I came back to it deciding that it looked like an underwater sean, I added more paint and markers, then machine quilted it.

I thought it called for a Mermaid and started to figure out the pose. I think that took longer than anything else. Once I finished and attached her, it was on to the embellishments. I added beads and shells. The large pearl that the mermaid is holding is a blister pearl pendant that I cut off the bail.

Under the twin/rope braid is a finished binding. The grass on the side is edge finished by burning.
