This was a quilt I made for my parents 40th Anniversary.  I didn't know what to buy them, so last minute I desided to make a wallhanging.  I made this in a week and a half!!!  It is full of symbolizm (?)  The blue background was hand dyed, it's my mothers favorite color.  The poem is a poem I wrote for thier anniversary and then printed on fabric and dyed.  Of course I didn't keep a copy of the poem for myself.  But it basically talks about the imagery on the quilt itself.  After 40 years they are looking out at their future and the life they have made together is represented by the tree, which I made using thread on washout stabilizer and then I tacked to the quilt.  The tree is the only part that is not my design.  The outline and process was from an old quilt article in Quilters Newsletter magazine.  It was printed 5 to 10 years ago. The green grass fabric was sun painted using plants and flowers from my mothers garden.  On the table there is a set of wedding rings, gold leaf paint.  The rose is thread pinted over a raw edge appligue, it represents their 40 years together.  And like a rose they had their own share of thorns.  The picture in the frame is their wedding picture which was printed on fabric.  The doily it sits on is s piece of her wedding dress.  The top part of the window frame has shiny tulle to give the illusion of a window.

18 1/2 x 22 inches

It's all fusible, raw edge applique- due to the time constraints.  I had so much fun making this quilt, it came together really well.  And even though it is not perfect, it's perfect to me and my parents!!!

What a great gift! How cool you used a piece of your mother's wedding dress.
