Hawaiian watercolor pillow

Hi, this is the first quilted project I have ever completed, so please don't judge me TOO hard :) Using a photo of Waikiki, I did a painting on a white fat quarter using Caran d'Ache watercolor sticks. Touched up some of the areas thad bled too much with white fabric paint. Free motioned it using mostly invisible thread, except where I wanted the stories of the buildings to show. Sewed the pillow and stuffed it. (the back is a Hawaiian print fabric.) Then I took a few silk leis, unstrung the flowers and hand sewed them along the seams. Voila! This will match a full-size Hawaiian memory quilt I am planning to make for my mom. It also got me my first rejection letter- from Quilting Arts, lol.

Very clever use of your materials. The water color is very pretty.... having just given this a try myself, I appreciate the detail you were able to achieve and how you "corrected" areas that needed touching up. Nice work.

Nice work and the colors are great.  How do you use the watercolor sticks?

thanks! you color with them like crayons, then add water either with a paintbrush or a spray bottle. then heat set with an iron, but they are still prone to fading if you wash them. there's a chapter on how to use them in the Quilting Arts book, which was reprinted from a back issue of the magazine.

don't you just love rejection letters!!!  I love it.  Especially the flowers on the edge.  Brilliant.

Your quilted pillow took me right back in memory to the Waikiki beach on Oahu. I was 18, i am far from that now. ;D I

I admire that you have a rejection letter. that shows the courage you had to submit at all. I have not yet had that courage though i have been quilting and writing and painting, lots of art and many crafts for over 20 years and I have not entered ANYTHING yet. 

Congratulations and keep on trying. ;D
