I love this piece!  You don't ever mention what the dimensions are so it's very hard to tell exactly what you should do with it, but if it were MY piece, I'd back it, quilt around the whole of the cross area leaving the rest of the brown area alone. Then I think I would just do little seed type stitches in the yellow area, leaving the crosses alone. But that's me....   And then I think I'd use it as a wall hanging in my entry way. It's really lovely!

I really like this piece.  When I first looked at it, the irregular shape of the area where the crosses are seemed like the edge to me and it appeared to be sitting on a wood floor.  But now I see that the whole thing is painted.  I would cut close to the crosses and let the edges be irregular, simply fold the edges to the back.  I would quilt around each of the crosses, leaving the crosses to stand out against the quilted background.  More ideas may come as you start manipulating it.  Beautiful and thought-provoking.

I could see this with  celtic crosses ( latin cross with a circle) quilted across the background in varying sizes probably done in a gold/bronze metalic thread, with lines of stitching meandering from top to bottom around the crosses in the center

I love this piece.  I would square it up, quilt the crosses, add metalic threads and cross-hatch the rust corners then send it to me!!!!

I agree that it initially looks like crosses lying on a wood floor.  If you like that effect perhaps you could emphasise it with quilting stitches? As far as the crosses go - research iconic art and then add some bling.  It looks like a great opportunity to add all those shiny metallic beads and doodads that we all save for 'the perfect quilt''. The crosses are attractive so make them intriguing with more detail. If you go with DreamrKate's idea of using it in your entry way people are going to see it up close and will appreciate the extra dimension.  This UFO is worth finishing.

Oooohhh!  The church related idea + the idea of researching iconic crosses sparked the quilting idea for the lower left corner...one of the wonderful Russian Orthodox onion dome churches in quilting/outlne minimal contrast thread?
