Kowhai in Spring

The Kowhai tree is native to New Zealand and has the most beautiful display of yellow flowers in spring, our native birds the Tui and Kereru (wood pidgeon) flock to them and get drunk on the nectar and sometimes fall out of the trees and have to be rescued from waiting cats that would take advantage of them in their drunken state for a quick meal.

I have used a raw edge applique method, with machine embroidery and quilting as well as a bit of beadwork added to the stamens of the flowers.

So pretty, & depth perception is great...love the bead work.

I like that the background is very interesting, but does not steal the scene from the Kowhai...
