Ann: "I attended a class by a member of our "Off Your
Blocks" fabric art group to learn a new technique. I also made an extra set so
that I could experiment with the designs by cutting them into different
patterns to see what would happen. My intention was to make a smaller piece.
The UFO I am sending was cut into square shapes and I do not like them. I
started to embellish the pieces but did not finish them. I basted the pieces on
the background materials so they would not be lost. I am open to any changes
that you want to experiment with-taking away, adding to, or reshaping the
design."
Jaynie: "My initial impression upon opening the UFO sent
to me to complete was that I liked it. That's a good place to start. I felt the
red background competed with the purple appliquéd rectangles so I placed them
on a different base. I aimed for movement and depth by rearranging, layering
sheers, and repeating motifs. The techniques I used include layering sheers,
burning to cut out tulle motifs, stenciling with paint sticks, appliqué, and
oil pastels."
