City Barn

I've been working on this project for a while and I like other projects I really get Stuck! trying to figure out how to finish it (i.e., mount it on something, add a background, etc.)  I did a pictorial quilt of my mom and was stuck on trying to complete the background – I finally just found some boring beige and did some free motion machine quilting for the background and it turned out ok.

I took this picture of an old barn located in a subdivision in Warren Michigan.  I traced the photo onto muslim, painted it with just acrylic paints, added some free motiion machine stiching, some material for the grass, added some embroidery for the leaves, and satin stiched around the edging and then hand sewed the edging with thicker threads I had in my stash.

Can you help me finish it 🙂

  1. It is a great piece. Don’t take the work too seriously. It is supposed to be play and not nerves!

Suggestion; I’d place another chair in the left foreground facing right.

    Keep up the good work!

  2. Would adding an animal to the scene be the touch you are searching for? How about a dimensional bird or butterfly? You could even add some glitz with beads, etc. if you like that sort of thing.

Is this intended to be an early dawn or dusk scene? I didn’t notice any shadows showing light direction.

  3. It could use a scarf dropped over the chair arm or on the ground to show that a woman had been there soaking in the peace.  Then it is done.

  4. I think Sandy is onto something… some shadows might be the oomph you’re looking for to give it more depth.

I also agree with the bird/butterfly idea – something small and colorful strategically placed to add interest.

It’s very eye-pleasing. Please let us see what you end up with!

  5. Since I like bright I would add a pot of flowers and maybe a book left open on the chair somewhere to give the impression of someone who has just left and will return  for some peaceful solitude.
