"Bobcat at Heart"

My inner animal is the bobcat. The small quilt for this challenge is a whimsical rendition of a bobcat in a tree based on a true childhood experience. The design is made from a picture of a bobcat which I morphed with a picture of my face, although the bobcat features strongly came through as I worked on the main image with thread painting and free-motion quilting.  I added the raw edge appliqué tree branch and leaves. I love the look of the bobcat in the wild.  I have seen how swiftly they run with a fast free stride. They are not easily intimidated and do not always run away when confronted. These small and wild cats are beautiful with a mix of fur colors and shades, from beige to brown with spotted or lined markings in dark brown or black. The tufted fur at the tips of their ears and sides of the faces are very distinctive. Bobcats belong to the Lynx family of felines.

  1. I lived in the country when I was a little girl. During a family picnic at the local creek,  one afternoon I saw some cute ‘kitties’ in a tree at the edge of the woods. I begged my dad to rescue the kitties. Dad told me the small cats were not for pets, they were wild and waiting for their mother.  I cried and begged him to get one for me to hold just for a few minutes.  Against his better judgment, Dad climbed the tree and managed to get one of the kitties under his arm and started down the tree.  We all heard a loud animal scream and rustling in the adjoining tree…it was the mother bobcat!  Dad put the ‘kitty’ back on the limb and scrambled out of the tree. Poor Dad…so many scratches…from the kitty and the tree! We all moved away from the trees and back to the creek area and hastily headed for home.  I was amazed rather than afraid and thereafter always looked for a bobcat when I would be walking in the wooded areas around our home.   Enjoy, dcl

  2. I love the thread play of his facial features, if his eye were blue, he would look like Teddie or as we call him Hemroid.  He is so cute you just have to love him.  I think that the leaves are very real looking with the different colors and textures.  I just love cats or should I say felines, any type.  They are so enjoyful.  Teddie just jumped here to help me type on the computer, he knows to lay down right away or I will have to boot him off cause he blocks the screen. Your color choice of the back ground really set off the face of the cat…….had I done this challenge, I probably would have picked a cat as my inner animal too.  Very good job,  I love it.  Congrats wee lassie!

  4. All I can say is “WOW”.  The minute I saw those eyes I was drawn into the soul of not only the bobcat but it’s creator.  Everything about this quilt is beautiful.

  5. I love the affect the thread painting creates on this cute little face. It’s looks like real hair. I love the mischevious smile and the glow of those green eyes. The leaves have so much depth and appear so real and create demension.  A beautiful work of imagination. I absolutely LOVE it!
