Fabric of the Universe

"Fabric of the Univers e"(31” W x 26.5” T) is dedicated to the energy that loving people put out into the Universe. As their energy weaves and blends with others, an etheric fabric is created out past our planet. I hope that the smile that you generate when you read this description will add to the tapestry of Love that we all are creating.

 The black on black beading is incredibly intricate, yet doesn’t photograph well. Even though I knew that that would be the case, I still liked the idea that a complicated pattern of beauty was being created. I find that to often be the case, that some of the most amazing things in life are only seen on close examination. Another facet of this piece that I particularly like are the shi-sha mirrors from India. They collect little pools of light and send them out into the room, much like the stars in the sky.

Most of my pieces are done without any sketches. I put the background fabric up on the wall in my studio, and then start putting up the other pieces of fabric, lace, netting, or whatever is called for in the piece. When all of the big shapes and colors are in place, I then sew them down. Next, the quilt sandwich is made, and then my favorite part begins. I have a huge collection of buttons and beads laid out in boxes and jars by colors. These objects are my “paint”, and I work with huge piles sitting around me from which to choose. Working from the largest shapes to the smallest, I finally end with the seed beads.

  1. Dear TEMA, thanks for the kind comments. I rpobably will never do black beading on black fabric again, as it’s too hard on the eyes, especially at night. …but then, never say never, because if a client waved a big, fat check in front of my face for a commission piece, I’m sure I could be persuaded…:) I always used to “connect the dots” when I looked at the stars at night…it’s just that I wanted a LOT more dots than most people. I’d love to see some of your work with your newly inspired interest in buttons, but I declare here that I am  not responsible for any drain on your bank accoun. Acquiring buttons can be so-o-o addictng!

Dear Cousette, I practice what a friend calls “Needlework Obsessive”, in why settle for a few buttons and beads will make a MUCH bigger statement…:) It does make for many stuck fingers..all of my quilts are authenticated by the drops of blood that accidentally get deposited on the quilts. Still, having gotten on the road of covering most square inches on the surface of my quilts, the richness of texture, for me, makes up for the slow producition process.

Wow!  I looked at your web site.  I’m courious to know if you stitch all the way thru all 3 layers? and if so do you put another back on to cover the knots and stitching?  I did a garden design with lots of embroidered flowers.  I did’nt stitch all the way thru and must have pulled some stitche too tight as the quilt was somewhat warped.

    You have inspired me to try again.


  4. Dear Bina, Yup, I go through all 3 layers, and the back is a tangled mess. It does impress upon people all of the little tiny stitches that went into a piece, as a 1″ square of heavy beading = 1 hour’s work. I’m sute that my pieces would never pass muster in a traditional quilt show, as the back is as important as the front, but art quilt shows don’t seem to mind.As for warping, the pieces are relatively small. I always work on a flat drawing board on top of a small folding table. I start in the middle and work my ways towards the edges, and because the beading is all over, the work is consistently inconsistent.

    I do block the pieces afterwards before putting ont eh binding and also aftrewards.
