Grandma’s Dresden Plates Friendship Quilt

I have just completed the top of Grandma's Dresden Plate Friendship Quilt. The six blocks were  made by my mother in law in the early 1940's.. We found them packed carefully away after her death in 2003. Each block has the name of one of her friends, four blocks were also embellished with embroidered flowers.

I have pieced these precious blocks with a border of log cabin blocks and triple stripped sashing. I used reproduction 1930's fabrics which matched the colors quite well. During the piecing hours I have tried to imagine what the dresses made from the fabrics would have looked like. My mother in law, Bessie, was the only girl with 5 brothers so the fabrics were from her clothes and her mother's.

My father in law is planning to write something about each person named in the blocks. This quilt will go to my oldest daughter, who has her grandmother's diary. When I told her my plans she remembered one of the girlfriends named in the diary. This will surely lead her to reread her grandmothers words again with added meaning because of the blocks being made into a quilt she can cherish and hand down to her only daughter.
