This piece was started in a New York Beauty paper piecing class years ago. I used the patterns to experiment with different treatments of the traditional block – no two are the same either in design or colors. My intent was to arrange all the blocks in a non traditional way. Since the blocks reminded me of the sharp volcanic rock I had seen in a recent trip to Hawaii, I added "hot bubbling lava" in the center of all the "rough" edges. From a distance I see hard straight edges and I would like to soften these with quilting (other ideas welcome) but am uncertain how to go about it.
