Punga Fern

This type of fern is very common in the forrest and bush in NZ.

I used quite ugly rayon and synthetic fabrics to make this sandwiched between washaway stabiliser and machine embroidered the fern design, then washed it, dried it and trimmed back to the edge of the stitching, and very gently melted the edges with a soldering iron to get a good finish. I then glued my Punga fern to a painted stretched canvas.

I'm real pleased with the finished piece and can have lots of new ideas for this technique.

  1. Great idea; sandwiching the different fabrics, then stitching the shape and finally cutting away the excess.  You’ve given me lots of inspiration.  Thanks.
