The brilliant hues of the Collared Lizard are a striking contrast to the browns, oranges, and reds of the American Southwest. The Four Corners region, especially, is my favorite place to travel, and every time I go there, collared lizards follow me — in my campsite, on hikes, visiting Anasazi ruins. Like me, the lizards like to bask lazily in the warm sunshine, not moving much, but noticing everything around them. In the harsh heat of the desert, the lizard is a reminder of the cool turquoise water waiting at the end of the day.
