Susan L. Griffin

I grew up on an apiary tending colonies of bees and my family and friends believe I’m still "busy as a bee" so my art quilt features the apis mellifera. To get the look I wanted I used the reverse side of a commercial fabric and rubbed Shiva Paintstiks over a piece of actual honeycomb foundation then used a dry brush to blend the colors. Pounding flowers from my garden onto pre-treated muslin transferred the dye to make up the flower section of the quilt. I hand embroidered the details with embroidery floss and used bamboo batting. The quilting was completed free motion on my domestic sewing machine. The title of my work is "Perhaps I’m a Subset of the Genus Apis mellifera".
