Being a Leo, until I fell several years ago while cross-country skiing and causing an inoperable pinched nerve, I have always been a strong-willed, hard-working person at the "top of my game".  My quilt expresses my softer side.  The teardrop is for my beloved canine companion and friend, Nadia, who we had to have euthanized a few days before this past Thanksgiving; the same day I had a houseful of company coming for the holiday and staying nearly a week.  She was a great comfort to me; I miss her so much and still grieve for her.

The piece was hand needle-felted using my own hand dyed wool roving and purchased silk tops, machine quilted with a variety of threads (including variegated), with hand embroidered features.  I also used some of my discharged fabric for the nose and backing, fishing line for whiskers (chin whiskers are my own gray hair), beaded teardrop; all appliqued to a piece of hand dyed silk, also machine quilted.

About Helen Gregory

Helen Gregory is the managing editor for Quilting Arts Magazine and Cloth Paper Scissors. She has been quilting for years; however, her very first quilt, a hand-pieced Grandmother's Flower Garden design, is still not finished! Since joining the QA/CPS team, Helen's stash has grown to include many mixed-media items. Basically, Helen has crossed over and sees artful possibilities in, well, everything. Having worked for years in the quilting industry, both as an editor and in marketing, she is absolutely thrilled to be part of the QA team. Like everyone on the QA/CPS staff, she wears many hats, and was recently mistaken for Pokey's personal assistant during the taping of QA TV Season 4.
