The most creative problem solver of them all: can't reach the top?  grow your neck!

Giraffe's reach for the stars, have their heads in the clouds, get a great bird's eye view and really know how to stick their neck out.

I free-motion embroidered over a photo of a giraffe (that I made the acquaintance of at the Barcelona Zoo where the giraffe pen has a bridge over it so you can get close up and personal and feed them; they love oranges!) The background is painted fusible webbing on broadcloth with a tulle overlay,  fused applique stars and background leaves  both free-motion embroidered, with felted wool leaves hand stitched on top for three dimensional effect.  Sequins and beads were added to the sky and to the felted leaves.

The binding is woven metallic sari silk and the words "reaching for the stars". "head in the clouds", "birds'eye view" and "creative problem solving"  are printed on silk organza and fused around the border.

About Helen Gregory

Helen Gregory is the managing editor for Quilting Arts Magazine and Cloth Paper Scissors. She has been quilting for years; however, her very first quilt, a hand-pieced Grandmother's Flower Garden design, is still not finished! Since joining the QA/CPS team, Helen's stash has grown to include many mixed-media items. Basically, Helen has crossed over and sees artful possibilities in, well, everything. Having worked for years in the quilting industry, both as an editor and in marketing, she is absolutely thrilled to be part of the QA team. Like everyone on the QA/CPS staff, she wears many hats, and was recently mistaken for Pokey's personal assistant during the taping of QA TV Season 4.
