  • How to Applique in Reverse

In my travels to quilt shows, exhibits, and "Quilting Arts TV" tapings, as well as virtual traveling via social media, I'm seeing a big return to some of the traditional sewing crafts like smocking, tucking, and hand appliqué . I don't know whether it's the ‘70s fashion...

  • The Easiest Way to Hand Applique

Perhaps it's my Scandinavian genes, but there's something about felt appliqué that really gets my heart racing. The charming motifs, the soft felt, and the simple embroidery stitches remind me of my grandmother's kitchen. Felt appliqué projects from Mollie Makes Feathered Friends...

  • Customize Handmade Bags with Applique

I'm a sucker for bag and purse patterns. If they feature appliqué hexagons or are made with a fun, contemporary fabric, so much the better. My Pretty Little Tote Bag with hexagon appliqués. The Pretty Little Tote Bag I made for Modern Patchwork 2012 is simple enough, and you can jazz...

  • 1930's lady

This art quilt /pictorial quilt is 17,3 x 20,5 " and framed. I have used machine quilting, applique and 3D appearance by letting the scarf of the hat stand out from the picture.

  • Bump Up the Texture in Applique Quilts

I enjoy raw-edge appliqué for many reasons. It's certainly a faster way of appliqué quilting than hand appliqué and I like the extra texture it brings to my fiber art. For example, when I appliqué leaves and branches onto my nest quilts, the little wisps of thread that...

  • Bernie

My friend's dog, Bernie, recently passed away so I designed this quilt as a remembrance for her from a photo. The dog has been appliqued using fusible iron-on backing and then free motion stitching. The background colors were selected to match the color sceme of her house.

  • Etude de Chat en Violet

The intent, focused gaze of this Himalayan cat intrigued me. I designed this quilt from a photograph provided by the owner. I used all commercial cotton fabrics for his body, and a perfectly matched silk for his eyes as I liked the sheen and depth of it. The technique is all applique/reverse applique...

  • Childs collection of Florida Beach images

This quilt is my first attempt at my own design as I couldn't find an appropriate pattern. I found the designs in books and from images on the internet. This was a gift to my great niece, Hailey.

  • Etude du Chat

This is an appliqued close-up portrait of a cat designed from a photograph. I found the photograph and challenge of translating it into fabric irresistable, though it required a redesign of the nose area halfway through, and quite a bit of fabric trialing to try to get his coloring the way I wanted it...

  • An English Cottage Garden

I drew the inspiration for this art quilt from my cottage garden. I love my garden and take too many pictures of it, my camera is filled with pictures of flowers and quilts. I hand painted the silk background and painted the flowers from my drawings onto silk as well. Then appliqued the flowers on. Thread...
