  • Which Die-Cutting Machine is Right for You?

Many quilters who use appliqué, patchwork patterns , or repeated motifs in their art swear by die-cut machines. The machines can save time, make cutting easier on the hands and back (no endless hours with the rotary cutter and mat), and improve accuracy. Die-cutting machines can make cutting fabric...

  • Choosing Fabrics for Landscape Quilts – Leaves and Flowers

This winter has been so long and snow-filled in my part of the world, it seems spring might never come. Of course I know it WILL come, but in the meantime, I'm getting my color fix from fabric, fibers, and quilt art . "Out on a Limb," quilt art by Nancy Zieman. Working on landscape quilts...

  • Modern Quilting Trends: What I Learned from QuiltCon 2015

I left my heart in Austin... QuiltCon, the show put on by The Modern Quilt Guild (MQG), might be smaller in number of attendees and the amount of quilts on display than some of the larger shows. But what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in spirit and quality. The more than 300 fresh, modern...

  • Writing on Fabric: How to Put the Text in Textiles

Is it a coincidence that the word "text" can be found in "texture" and "textiles"? Maybe so. But whether you scribble on background fabric with a permanent pen or make a focal point with 3-D embellished letters, text adds texture to textiles. Here are five techniques for...

  • How to Pack Your Quilt Art for Safe Shipping

Exquisite quilt art arrives at our offices every day. As a quilter myself, I know how scary it can be to wrap one of my "babies" up and ship it off to a magazine, client, or venue. We do our utmost to make sure quilts from our contributors are well cared for while they are in our hands and...

  • Should You Turn Your Quilt Art Hobby Into a Business?

I think it's safe to say that most anyone who has ever created something beautiful--from art quilts to knitted scarves to jewelry--has been told, "You should sell these!" And with so many opportunities to promote and sell your wares online, launching an art-based business is tempting. Especially...

  • 5 Steps to Better Portrait Art Quilts

Looking back over the last 12 months, I'd have to say that portraiture was a big trend in modern and creative quilting . From pixel quilts made of tiny fabric squares to mixed-media quilts that enhanced fabric with paint or colored pencil, quilt artists made a lot of faces. Judging by what I've...

  • Quilted Felting - where to talk about it and share?!

Not sure which of the subforums "Quilted Felting" belongs in, much less Art Quilting that incorporates polymer clay...so I will try here! In some ways, felting - be it by hand or by machine - is rightfully an embellishment. But at times what I am doing is creating cloth, which is then quilted...

I am free motion quilting a king size cotton patchwork quilt on my vintage Featherweight. The thread is a 40 weight polyester embroidery thread, and I am using new embroidery needles, size 11 and 12. Even after putting in a new needle, I can sew for a few minutes, and then I get a shredded top thread...

  • mixing hand-painted fabrics with commercial prints

Hi! I used a glue-resist and hand-painted some lovely and lively pieces! Now I want to use them in an art quilt BUT they are so "dull" comparted to the commercial prints I chose. I wanted my hand-painted pieces to stand out but I think they will be lost. How do I brighten them up, or how do...
