Behind the Scenes of Quilting Arts TV Series

Our best-selling online course is back and better than ever! APQS Longarm Certification Sponsored by Quilting Daily has been revised and updated. Not only will you learn how to make beautiful quilts, you’ll also gain skills to turn your passion into a paycheck with tips on how to run your own quilting business.

What is the atmosphere behind the scenes at the taping of Quilting Arts TV… the long-running Public Broadcasting television show and video series dedicated to art quilting?

Imagine a studio set for learning, with room for hanging quilts, dyeing fabric, and sewing projects – small and big – on brand new Bernina machines. The set is draped with fresh artist-dyed fabrics and with the newest prints from our favorite manufacturers. Four cameras hang at awkward angles, ready to capture the guests in the act of creating unique artwork. A makeup artist is at the ready to prep, powder, and primp, and a team of dedicated camera operators, editors, producers, and support staff are prepared for every opportunity to ‘make the magic happen’.

Then populate that studio with world-class art quilters from near and far… and you’ve got the perfect combination of preparation, perspiration, and inspiration that makes this show a winner.

We’ve just put the finishing touches on Series 2400, and I can’t wait to share it with you. This theme of this season of “Quilting Arts TV” is Examine, Experiment, Explore! Join host Susan Brubaker Knapp as she leads us on a journey with artists who have taken their work to a new level by working with unusual materials, incorporating unconventional fiber art techniques, and exploring the possibilities of a fresh artistic perspective.

Some of this season’s highlights include:

Sherri Lipman McCauley demonstrates her flinging paint technique, including how to apply paint using eye droppers, squeeze bottles, syringes, and found objects. Check out Episode 2403, “Loosen Up!”

Sherri works her magic again in Episode 2405, “Make Your Mark,” demonstrating how to apply paint with gestural motions to create wholecloth tops. Design art quilts with a layer of felt backing and, using a walking foot, stitch piece in gentle curves. Apply colorful accents and a few hand stitches for interest.

In Episode 2410, “Unconventional Materials,” Deborah Fell presents an experiment with gel medium and how it allows designers to use unconventional materials in their quilts.

The best part about being a part of this wonderful production is sharing it with our viewers! I love the excitement as our guests post on social media about what they are enjoying, and our viewers get to see the big reveal of the projects online. After more than 12 years of Quilting Arts TV, it’s always something to look forward to.
