Are you ready for Christmas this year (assuming you celebrate)? It’s getting down to the wire to round out your décor and put the finishing touches on or under the tree. Over the years, I’ve discovered a few products that make really nice last-minute decorations or gifts, and these easy custom Christmas tree ornaments are a great option. Even if it’s too late for you to get them in hand by Christmas this year, you can get a head start for next year or earmark any potential Christmas gift money to treat yourself in the new year.

A fun project full of possibilities! Easy to do in just a few minutes.

Outstanding Original Ornaments

Last year I had a really good time using laser-cut quilt block ornaments from OldMountainCraftsNC on Etsy to make quick, personalized gifts for my quilt-loving coworkers. Each ornament comes with a laser cut side and a blank side, so you can put some fabric behind and make it super special and personalized.

It was fun to choose which motif should go behind which block.

They’re especially fun because you can work with fabric and complete a project with a sense of satisfaction, but they go together in minutes! I had some leftover fabric from the Talisman by Katia Hoffman for Windham Fabrics and you would not believe how perfectly the proportions of the print motifs worked with the laser cuts. It was a Christmas miracle!

The Perfect Fabric

While Talisman is a relatively older collection, it can still be found for sale at many stores online if you’d like to try it out for yourself. It really enhanced the ornaments and made them look so elegant and totally unique! The motifs are just the right size to peek through the openings in the cutouts of the blocks and look designed to be there. I fused the back of the fabrics with paper-backed fusible web, then used the cutout block designs to plan my fussy cuts to go behind each one.

This one has a different print to go behind the cutout block, but it still looks amazing when used all together!

Make It!

Then I could just fuse the fussy cut squares onto the backing piece of the ornament. No steam, though! I learned that when one of them warped oh-so-slightly. Then you can use tiny dabs of wood glue on the corners to the laser cut block piece and center it on the fused background. If any glue leaks out you can clean it up with a toothpick. Then press it under a book or something heavy and flat to dry. And voila! Put a ribbon hanger on and you have a beautiful custom Christmas tree ornament, for you or someone you like.

The motifs fit the cutouts so beautifully! Viewing each ornament head-on shows the motif to best effect, so it’s tricky to photograph them all together.

Ready to Make Your Own?

Now, like I mentioned, it’s probably too late to get this done in time for this Christmas. But good ideas don’t have an expiration date! But if you have a Glowforge machine, you can make your own in just a few minutes! Along with a million other creative projects. Or if you’ve been very, very good you can add one to your wish list for next year, too.

Lots of cool quilt block gift items from Built Quilt.

For some other quilt-related items made from wood, I also love the coasters, tea light holders, journals, and enamel pins from Built Quilt. They make great gifts (it may be too late to get them for this Christmas, but bookmark the page for your gift ideas for your quilt friends birthdays and for next year). If you decide to make one yourself, be sure to share with us on Instagram, Facebook, or the comments below. Happy Holidays and happy quilting!
