Easy Fat Quarter Quilt Patterns for Modern Quilters
Do you ever walk into a fabric store and literally run your hand down the entire aisle of bolts? Do you smell the fabric, new, and full of possibilities? Do you leave your fat quarter bundles all tied up in their pretty ribbons because they are so precisely folded, and you know you won’t get them back that way and they’re just so perfect?
Please tell me this isn’t only me. Here’s the thing though, despite what my husband thinks, I am not actually a fabric hoarder. I like to use all of my lovely fabric. But, to cut the tie on that amazingly coordinated fat quarter bundle I need a reason. A good reason. Like an easy fat quarter quilt pattern. So, I’ve compiled a few of my favorite modern patterns that are fat quarter friendly, in hopes that instead of simply stroking our lovely packs of fabrics, we might use them too!
A Few Easy Fat Quarter Quilt Patterns to Check Out:
Scrap Lattice Quilt
Have you ever seen a scrappy quilt and thought, “I love this pattern but I don’t have the scraps to make it”? This is where fat quarters can be so useful! Heather Kojan’s pattern calls for 16–20 fat quarters in blue, and 16–20 fat quarters in neutrals. Because of the scrappy strip set construction of this quilt, anything goes in terms of fabric selection. This quilt can be easily modified for any color palette or season and is a great statement piece.
Ombré Radiance
Created from two fat quarter bundles, this not-so-traditional Log Cabin interpretation by Malka Dubrawsky shines by incorporating the trend of ombré—falling through purples and greens to meet in a simple hourglass shape in the middle. Since fat quarter packs come pre-coordinated, simply sort into warm and cool colors, from light to dark and you’re on your way to creating this quilt. This is such a fun way to sew up a love letter to your favorite collection, and an amazing canvas for really creative quilting.
