Opacity, Transparency, and Layers | Quilting Arts Podcast Episode 8

As artists, we know the value of creating imagery with depth and dimension. The process of creating that depth can be achieved by layering – whether it is physically overlapping images, layers of paint, stitching, or even themes.

Today’s Artist in Residence, Lynn Koolish, has mastered the art of layering imagery in her work.

Postcard Challenge

Lynn, Susan, and Vivika all made postcards that incorporated layers. Check them out! If you want to create your own layered postcard and play along on Instagram, tag them with #quiltingartspodcast and join the fun!

Lynn layered 2 photos in Photoshop Elements using Blending odes, then printed the image on TAP and embroidered it.
Susan’s postcard includes layers of paint-dyed fabric, metallic mesh fabric, Angelina (pressed and embossed), hand-dyed cheesecloth, and free-motion stitching.
Vivika’s postcard is a layered fabric collage on top of eco-dyed botanical print that has been enhanced with colored pencils and watercolor paint.
Vivika’s current layered paper collage includes imagery painted and printed on book pages.

This Episode’s Quote

“The Hallmark of creative people is their mental flexibility… Sometimes they are open and probing, at others they’re playful and off-the-wall. At still other times, they’re critical and faultfinding. And finally, theyre doggedly persistent in striving to reach their goals.”

-Author and creativity expert, Roger von Oech
