Background
… Cut 4 squares 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″
… Cut 4 squares 2 7/8″ x 2 7/8″
… Cut 4 rectangles 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″
… Cut 4 squares 3 5/16″ x 3 5/16″
Green print
… Cut 1 square 6 3/16″ x 6 3/16″
Red print
… Cut 8 squares 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″
… Cut 4 squares 2 7/8″ x 2 7/8″
… Cut 2 squares 4 7/8″ x 4 7/8″; cut diagonally to make 4 half-square triangles

Assembly Instructions
Step 1. On wrong side of 2 7/8″ background fabric, draw diagonal line with the marking tool of your choice. Layer square with 2 7/8″ red print square, right sides together. Sew 1/4″ seam on each side of marked line; cut apart on marked line. Press open to make pieced squares (Diagram I). Make 8 pieced-squares.

Step 2. Draw a diagonal line on wrong side of 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ red print squares. Layer red print square and 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ background rectangle, right sides together. Sew directly on top of drawn line. Cut away excess fabric 1/4″ from seamline. Press seam allowance. Repeat for other end of rectangle (Diagram II). Make 4.

Step 3. Using marking pencil of choice, draw diagonal line on wrong side of four 3 5/16 ” x 3 5/16″ squares. Place one square on corner of green print 6 3/16″ x 6 3/16″ square. Sew on drawn line and trim away excess fabric (Diagram III). Repeat for each corner to make pieced square.

Step 4. Mark 1/4″ match points on 4 7/8″ red print half-square triangles and pieced square unit (Step 3). Pin together and sew from edge to edge, using Diagram IV as sewing sequence guide.

Step 5. Referring to Assembly Diagram, sew units and 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ background squares together to make rows. Sew rows together to make Bear’s Paw Variation Block.
