Piecing the Block
Step 1. Using Diagram I as a guide, sew two 2 3/4″ red/black plaid quarter-square triangles to one 1 9/16″ red/white strip square to make pieced triangle unit. Make 4 total. Repeat to make 4 large pieced triangles using 2 3/8″ quarter-square triangles and 2″ squares.
Step 2. Using Diagram II as a guide, sew two 4 1/4″ red/black plaid quarter-square triangles, one red/white stripe quarter-square triangle, and one small pieced triangle unit together to make pieced square unit. Make 4.
Step 3. Using Diagram III as a guide, sew two 2 3/8″ half-square triangles and one cream 4 1/4″ quarter-square triangle to make flying geese unit. Make 12 total.
Step 4. Referring to Diagram IV, sew three flying geese units, two 2″ cream squares, and one pieced square unit together. Make 4 total.
Step 5. Referring to Diagram V, sew four large pieced triangle units to one 4 3/4″ square. Make 1.
Step 6. Referring to Assembly Diagram, layout block paying close attention to placement of pieced units. Sew pieced units and 5″ cream squares together to make rows. Sew rows together to make County Fair Variation Block.
