Wish the pattern showed the sizes of the half square triangles in diagrams I-A and I-B. I think they need to be 3 1/2″ square to match to the rest of the nine patch elements. I made a sample using the 7 3/4″ blue, white and red squares and the resulting half square triangles were barely 3 1/2″ and there was no extra for trimming. That being said, the Sew Easy Lesson says to cut squares twice the finished size of triangle squares plus 1 3/4″. What is finished size? Is it the size you’re going to need to attach to the 9-patch square or the finished, sewn together quilt size? It’s just not clear at all which is why I finally made a sample. I’m going to cut my squares 8″ or maybe even 8 1/4″ instead of 7 3/4″ so I can trim them to exactly 3 1/2″ square. If I’m missing something here, please let me know.

Hi Elizabeth,
We hear your frustration. We are equally frustrated. The recent trend of trimming or squaring up every unit has created all sorts of problems for us. We don’t calculate yardages and write patterns with oversized patches—we give exact sizes. If the quilter is accurately cutting, sewing, and gently pressing, then all units and blocks will also be the exact sizes needed—without any additional trimming (unless indicated in the pattern). So, measurements are unnecessary.
We applaud you for making the sample using the 8-at-a-Time Triangle-Square technique. Yes, units 1 and 2 should measure 3½”. The formula included in the Sew Easy lesson is for readers who might otherwise make triangle-squares 1 or 2-at-a-time. For patterns like Anthem that refer to this technique, the patch sizes already include this calculation. But the formula can also be used to calculate the finished unit size. Using the pattern’s A square size of 7¾” minus 1¾” = 6”. Divide that by 2 to get the 3” finished size (the size the unit measures inside the completed quilt). Add ½“ back for the seam allowance, and that gives you the unit measurement—3½”—or unfinished size. It’s also easy to see that these units are the same size as the 3½” C squares in Diagram V.
If units are coming up just short of 3½”, we suggest checking the ¼” seams. Using a scant ¼” seam allowance (just a hair less than ¼”) will help accommodate the fold when the triangles are pressed open. We believe that this small step would be so much easier than trimming 156 units (and will save a lot of fabric as well).
