Description
Ninety-degree, 60-degree, 45-degrees—oh my! Patchwork is shaped, if you will, by the angles we use. Can you imagine our art without squares, triangles, and diamonds?
Charisma Horton’s Prints Aplenty uses a 60° triangle atop a square (90°!) of the same print to produce…the illusion of a curve! Meanwhile, the same 60° triangle plus square produces stars in Maria Fuselier’s Circle of Stars. Abigail Dolinger’s Twisted Hexies uses a 60° angle, too, with a completely different effect. For this pattern, we used our Sew Easy Lesson: Cutting 60° Triangles. You know those lines on your rotary cutting rulers? They’re there for a reason. Expand your quilting know-how with this delightful table runner!
Let’s not neglect 45° angles! This issue’s “theme block” is the elegant, impressive Carpenter’s Star quilt block, which gives that angle a workout. Solo Star uses Stitch-and-Flip Corners, Blooming Stars is constructed with Flying Geese and Triangle-Squares, Star Sync uses String Piecing on Foundation Paper, and Fresh Grapes is built with bands of diamonds. Fresh Grapes is designed by Scott Flanagan, who is our featured designer for this issue’s Trunk Show. His approach to designing sampler quilts is fascinating—as are the resulting quilts!
If all those angles have your world on tilt, check out Dawn Cavanaugh’s Quilting the Quilt article to get back on balance…Your longarm’s tension balance, that is!
