Description

March is Women’s History Month and what better way to celebrate the amazing contributions of women than through quilts? From biblical times to today, the quilts and accompanying stories we received through our call for submissions are spectacular.

To start, don’t miss the article written by Barb Eikmeier about the First American Women quilt by Marci Hainkel. Marci made a stunning crazy quiltthat features women who were the first in their field and she was sure touse appropriate fabrics to match their skills—take a closer look. In McQ&A,a few of our editors share their personal stories about the women whoinspired them to quilt and sew.

Charisma Horton designed a quilt to tell the story of Esther from the Bible. Be sure to read what Charisma wrote about her inspiration. Bea Lee also chose a woman from the Bible, she chose Eve. This is the fourth quilt Bea has made over the years based on the Garden of Eden quilt block! Technical editor, Annette Falvo created For Emma, a quilt inspired by Emma Brockstedt from the Ladies Art Company. Emma created the first quilt pattern company in 1889 which gave quilters hundreds of quilt patterns to purchase, changing the landscape of quilting forever. Sharon Rexroad created Breaking Boundaries using her Doily Magic technique to represent Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s iconic collars. Sharon used so many elements within her quilt design to represent RBG’s amazing contributions for women’s rights.

We hope that these quilts influence you to think about the women who inspire you—whether it is the women whose stories encourage you to persevere, or the women you personally know who had a hand in your love of quilting—perhaps they deserve to be immortalized in cloth.
