  • Camera that can capture images at resolution of 300 dpi or higher
  • Photo editing software such as Photoshop Elements or GIMP
  • Freezer paper
  • Painter’s tape
  • Mechanical pencil
  • Red colored pencil
  • Assorted colored highlighter markers
  • A variety of fabrics in the colors of your animal
  • Fusible web product, approximately 3 time the size of your project, such as Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 or MistyFuse.
  • Scissors for cutting fabric and paper
  • A variety of threads to match the fabric selections (finalize selections after lesson 6)
  • White muslin, backing fabric, batting, and tulle the size of the finished project +4 inches in length and width
  • Sewing machine


Instructor: Lea McComas

With a life-long interest in fiber, Lea McComas began sewing at age 6 and quilting at 16. She earned an M.A. in Education and has been a public school educator for over 34 year, including 9 years spent teaching children of military families serving overseas.

While living abroad, Lea immersed herself in interaction and learning with the people and traditions of many cultures, including studying carpet weaving in Turkey and fabric dying in Japan. Upon her return to the states in 2001, Lea discovered art quilting.

Since then, her award-winning portrait and genre quilts have been exhibited in many national and international juried shows. Her work has also been featured in numerous publications. In 2014, she received the Superior Thread Masters Award for Thread Artistry at IQF Houston. Her first book, Thread-Painted Portraits, shares the extensive knowledge and techniques behind her award-winning portrait quilts.
