Description

Here’s a look at what you will discover in the 13 episodes of season 2500 of Quilting Arts TV!

2501 Nature
Nature is inspiration for the first episode of the season. Guest artist Janelle Girod pushes the boundaries on materials with sticks and stones and how to attach all different types of found objects. Then, Nancy Ryan redefines what a quilt should be with a spun polyester leaf using acrylic paint.

2502 Unconventional
Take your quilting to the edge with unconventional materials. Guest designer, Mel Beach invites you to expand your quilter’s palette as you discover how fun and easy it is to incorporate unconventional materials into your art quilts. Then, meet Deborah Fell as she demonstrates printing with items you might not have thought of before.

2503 Paint
Paint is a basic material until you put it into the hands of an art quilter! First, Nanette Zeller creates painted fabric with imagery on top. Then, host Susan Brubaker Knapp has a lesson on transparency beginning with hand painting or dyeing the back ground fabric; then adding line drawings, and shading to create the illusion of transparency.

2504 Mixed media
There are no limitations to what you can create when you mix media together for amazing results. Denise Oyama Miller introduces an abstract landscape technique for creating a simple landscape using mixed media, including fabric, paper, and paint. Then, Kristin Rodriguez creates “Wanderings”, a mixed media collage using stamps, stencils. pens, stitching, and collage all in one piece!

2505 Texture
Throw away your limitations and learn how to add texture to your art quilts with this episode. Jill Kerttula creates “topped with textures”. She layers and couches materials on top of a photographic layer to add detail and interest, even adding or modify color or shapes that don’t exist in the photo. Then, Margarita Korioth creates a cheesecloth skin to make transparent layers.

2506 Shine and Shimmer
Its time to release your inhibitions and go all out with shine and shimmer. Cheryl Sleboda shows how to make your quilts shine using heat transfer vinyl. Learn how to cut and iron it on your fabric. Then, Margarita Korioth shares more ideas for creating your own sheer material featuring cloth and napkins. Finally, warm up and practice your free-motion quilting by making a little saying “It is what it is” with host Susan Brubaker Knapp.

2507 3D Stitching
It’s all about escaping the confines of our normal processes as wearables and clothing notions are featured. Learn how add another dimension to your designs. Meet Sandra Johnson for wearables that are not your grandmother’s wearable art using old quilts to make jackets. Then, it’s Janelle Girod and Kristin Rodriguez together for a “Page in My Book”. Learn how to construct a small fabric page, creating layers using texture paste and stencils plus embroidery and even eyelets.

2508 Uncover the unexpected
When you go beyond the normal boundaries you are bound to find the unexpected, especially under the surface. Sherry Lipman McCauley shows why “It’s Not Just Black and White”, when she adds colorful appliques to painted lines then fuses with raw edge applique, sheers and bias tape to create designs. Last, Jill Kerttula adds layers under a photo layer – almost like piecing a quilt under the photo then slicing for texture and adding color and shapes not in the photo.

2509 Strips
If you are a strip quilter, it’s time to go beyond the design restrictions you might have placed on yourself. Rachel Clark demonstrates Seminole piecing with only three strips and the middle strip becomes squares. Then, it’s abstract strip quilting with Nancy Ryan. Create two fabrics, each with three different patterns and put them together in new ways for multiple variations.

2510 From Far Away; Other Cultures
Don’t let fear keep you in your comfort zone. Travel to far off places and learn about other cultures to expand your creativity. The first guest, Mel Beach shows how to add some Zen to your free-motion quilting. Warm up by seeing how a few simple shapes and filler motifs can be combined to create intricate mandala designs. Then, Rachel Clark works with African wax or batik prints. She demonstrates how to build units, the thought process on attaching units together for good design, and then how to use these units in garments.

2511 Color Meets Texture
Combining two elements in a new way can be a good way to break out of a creative “rut”. Color and texture shake hands and complement each other on this episode. Mel Beach demonstrates a resist technique using a dot stencil – Polka dot stencils. Then, Patricia Kennedy-Zafred introduces easy immersion dyeing using ziplock bags for fantastic color. Host Susan Brubaker Knapp finishes with a quilted wool pincushion from dyeing the wool, to sewing, adding embroidery and even stuffing with ground walnut shells!

2512 Small Projects
Small projects can break down big boundaries when you explore the details. First, Rachel Clark creates the what-not wallet – a small project with big design. Then Jill Kerttula hand stitches to bring out the details, like highlights on a painting, and also adds thicker texture.

2513 Stitch by Hand and Machine
Don’t limit yourself to always stitching the same way. This episode features some new stitch variations to try. First, Julie B. Booth demonstrates running stitch patterns – a Sashiko style and pattern darning. Host Susan Brubaker Knapp wraps up the season sharing some of her recent experiments with “dyeing” wool batting, stabilizing batting for quilting, creating a small quilted piece on a grid, and making an art quilt entirely from stitched wool felt – quilting directly on wool batting and wool felt to create beautiful texture and dimension.
