Description
Explore methods for creating three-dimensional fiber art with quilt artist Barbara Schneider. Focusing particularly on two techniques that she developed in creating her Leaf Series, Barbara guides viewers step-by-step through her process for creating shaped textile artwork in this exciting workshop video.
Starting with an introduction to her work, Barbara shares thoughts on inspiration–specifically the way her work is influenced by the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi (finding beauty in things that are imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete). Next, Barbara shares her fabric collage technique, which includes creating the template, layering fabrics, adding sheer overlays to create the effect of shading and texture, and toning with colored pencils. Also included in this section is a stitching demo in which Barbara shows her process for creating the veins, whorls, and marks on her pieces.
The second design technique covered in this video is the digital printing process Barbara uses for other pieces. Then Barbara demonstrates how to bring the pieces to life by shaping them so they catch the light and become three-dimensional. She also demonstrates cutting techniques to create lacy effects and serrated edges. Finally, Barbara shares examples of her finished artwork, including leaves, pods, and vessels.
Prepare to be inspired to create textile art with undulating sculptural surfaces that capture light and shadow in this inspirational Quilting Arts Workshop™ video.
